Michel Sánchez Says He Is Ready to Step Up Amid Manchester City Links
• Michel Sánchez says he feels ready to coach Manchester City if the opportunity arises
• The Girona coach has impressed since 2021, including Champions League qualification
• Pep Guardiola’s long-term future at City remains uncertain despite a contract until 2027
Girona head coach Michel Sánchez has said he believes he is ready to take the next step in his career and manage Manchester City if the opportunity presents itself.
The 50-year-old, who has been in charge of Girona since 2021, made the comments during an appearance on the ‘La Otra Grada’ podcast, where he expressed confidence in his ability to handle a top-level role.
“I do see myself as ready,” Sánchez said. “I see myself ready to coach any team.”
He added with a smile: “I don’t know if they see it that way. Obviously it’s not the same. I don’t have a magic wand to deal with every type of ego, but I can adapt and I want to experience it.”
Sánchez’s comments come at a time when questions remain over the long-term future of Pep Guardiola at City. Guardiola will mark a decade at the club this summer and is under contract until 2027, but has recently avoided giving clear assurances about his future following City’s Champions League exit to Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, Sánchez said he is actively preparing for the possibility of a move to the Premier League. “I have an English teacher and I keep working at it,” he said.
Since arriving at Girona, Sánchez has overseen a period of significant progress. He guided the club to promotion to LaLiga in his first season and was named manager of the season in 2023-24 after leading them to a third-place finish and their first-ever qualification for the Champions League.
Girona have continued to show competitiveness this season, recording notable results against both Barcelona and Real Madrid, and currently sit mid-table in LaLiga.
Sánchez’s rise within the City Football Group structure has positioned him as a potential future candidate for roles at a higher level, though any move to Manchester City would depend on Guardiola’s eventual decision regarding his tenure at the Etihad Stadium.
