Neymar Makes World Cup Return As Brazil Beat Scotland To Seal Top Spot In Group C
- Neymar made his first appearance of the 2026 World Cup after coming off the bench in Brazil’s 3-0 win over Scotland.
- Vinícius Júnior scored twice and Matheus Cunha added a third as Brazil secured first place in Group C.
- Carlo Ancelotti praised Neymar’s attitude and fitness after the forward returned from a calf injury layoff.
Neymar made his long-awaited return to World Cup action on Wednesday as Brazil defeated Scotland 3-0 to secure top spot in Group C and maintain their unbeaten start to the tournament.
The 34-year-old forward came off the bench in the 76th minute at Hard Rock Stadium, receiving a standing ovation from Brazil supporters as he made his first appearance at the 2026 World Cup following weeks of injury concerns.
Brazil were already comfortably ahead thanks to a first-half brace from Vinícius Júnior and a second-half goal from Matheus Cunha, but Neymar’s introduction provided one of the biggest moments of the evening as he returned to international action after recovering from a right calf injury.
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said after the match that Neymar had earned his opportunity through his work during rehabilitation and training.
“I think he deserved the opportunity to play, that’s why I gave him it,” Ancelotti said.
“He’s been preparing well, he’s been very serious about it. Because of his quality, I think he can play and help the team. I think he did well, even though he played for just a few minutes.”
Neymar replaced Cunha with 14 minutes remaining as Brazil comfortably saw out the victory, a result that confirmed their place at the top of Group C ahead of Morocco, who defeated Haiti in the group’s other fixture.
Before Neymar’s appearance, Vinícius once again underlined his growing importance to the national team with an outstanding display.
The Real Madrid winger capitalised on a defensive mistake to open the scoring before doubling Brazil’s advantage shortly before halftime with a header at the back post.
Cunha added the third goal on the hour mark to end any hopes of a Scotland comeback and leave the South Americans in complete control.
Despite Vinícius’ match-winning contribution, much of the post-match discussion centred around Neymar’s return.
“Yes. I think everyone played well. We played as a team, and that’s a good thing,” Vinícius said.
“There are many positives, such as Neymar coming off the bench, which can help us.”
Midfielder Bruno Guimarães also welcomed the forward’s return, describing Neymar as a key figure within the squad.
“Neymar is a star, a genius, a role model for all of us,” Guimarães said.
“We try our best to make him feel comfortable when he steps onto the field. I think he’s really happy to have come on.
“He’s a special guy, not only a great player, but also a great person.”
Neymar’s fitness has been one of Brazil’s biggest talking points since arriving in North America.
The Santos forward had not played for more than a month after suffering a calf injury and only returned to full training earlier this week. His participation in the World Cup remained uncertain until Ancelotti confirmed before the Scotland match that he was fully fit and available for selection.
The veteran forward remains Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 129 international appearances.
He featured at each of the previous three World Cups and scored eight goals across those tournaments, but questions had emerged about his place in the national team following a difficult spell with injuries.
Neymar has struggled for consistency since suffering a torn ACL during a World Cup qualifier in October 2023, although he has managed four goals in eight appearances for Santos this season.
His return now gives Brazil an additional attacking weapon heading into the knockout rounds as they continue their pursuit of a sixth World Cup title.
For Scotland, meanwhile, the defeat leaves them facing elimination after a disappointing display against one of the tournament favourites.
Brazil advance as Group C winners with maximum confidence, boosted by the return of one of the most influential players in the country’s football history.
