O’Reilly double drives Manchester City win as title race tightens
- Nico O’Reilly scores twice to seal vital win and cut Arsenal lead
- City show resilience after break as Newcastle apply late pressure
- Premier League race intensifies ahead of north London derby
Nico O’Reilly delivered a defining performance as Manchester City beat Newcastle United 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal and reignite the title race.

City began with purpose and intensity, moving the ball sharply and pressing high. Their opening goal came after Omar Marmoush surged forward and picked out O’Reilly, who resisted the temptation to square for Haaland and instead trusted his instinct. His strike was emphatic and deservedly put City ahead.
Newcastle responded when a loose clearance fell kindly for Hall, whose effort took a deflection before beating Gianluigi Donnarumma. Yet City regained control moments later, Haaland supplying a precise cross that O’Reilly met with authority to complete his first half brace.
While City dominated the opening period, the second half demanded a different kind of performance. Newcastle pushed higher and forced City to defend deep, with Haaland leading by example as he tracked back, blocked shots and cleared danger. The Norwegian did not add to his goal tally but his work rate and discipline underlined his growing influence.
Newcastle pressed for an equaliser, but City held firm, showing the defensive resilience that has underpinned their recent run. When the final whistle sounded, there was visible relief around the stadium and renewed belief that momentum is swinging their way.
They now sit on 56 points from 27 games and will watch Sunday’s north London derby with keen interest. Any slip from Arsenal would leave City well placed to reclaim top spot.
O’Reilly described the evening as one of the highlights of his young career.
“I am over the moon,” he told TNT Sports. “The win was the most important thing. Close the gap and apply as much pressure as possible. Very happy with the two goals. It is a dream of mine to win the Premier League.”
Elsewhere, Aston Villa saw their faint title hopes dented by a 1-1 home draw with Leeds United. Anton Stach’s stunning free kick gave Leeds the lead before Tammy Abraham equalised late on from the bench.
Chelsea missed the chance to strengthen their hold on fourth place as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley. Joao Pedro scored early before Wesley Fofana was sent off, with Zian Flemming heading in a
Brighton’s James Milner made history in their 2-0 win at Brentford, becoming the Premier League’s record appearance holder with his 654th outing, surpassing Gareth Barry.
West Ham and Bournemouth played out a goalless draw that did little to ease relegation concerns, extending a run of stalemates between the two sides.
For City, the focus now shifts to maintaining momentum. With belief restored and the gap narrowing, Guardiola’s side once again look capable of driving deep into the title run in.
