Portishead Town have been relegated to Step 5 and removed from the promotion play-offs following a ruling by the Football Association over their ground standards.

The decision means the club, who had competed at Step 4 this season, will drop into the Western League next campaign. They have also been replaced in the play-offs by the sixth-placed team, creating disruption across the division.

The FA determined that Portishead Town’s Bristol Road ground did not meet the required standards for Step 3 or Step 4 football. Regulations state that clubs failing to meet grading requirements by March 31 are ineligible for promotion or play-off participation and must be relegated.

An appeal lodged by the club was rejected after a hearing on April 27, confirming the sanction.

In a strongly worded response, Portishead Town officials expressed frustration, claiming they had followed guidance from the FA and were led to believe their improvement plans would be sufficient.

The club said new spectator stands had been ordered and were due to be installed, but delays caused by health and safety concerns prevented completion before the deadline. They requested a short extension to finish the work by July, which was denied.

“Portishead Town FC is devastated,” a club statement said. “We feel we have been penalised despite following instructions and making significant progress.”

The situation has had wider implications, with uncertainty affecting other clubs involved in the play-offs. Willand Rovers, previously facing relegation, now retain their status as a result of the decision.

The FA defended its position, stating there had been “extensive engagement” with the club throughout the season and that the required standards were not met within the agreed timeframe.

The governing body also disputed claims that a full extension had been granted, clarifying that any flexibility discussed applied only to dressing room improvements, not key infrastructure such as spectator stands.

Despite the setback, Portishead Town insist they remain committed to completing the necessary upgrades and returning to higher levels of the football pyramid in the future.

The ruling brings a dramatic end to what had been a successful period on the pitch for the club, which had been targeting a third consecutive promotion before the off-field decision reshaped their trajectory.
