Xavi Simons has been ruled out for the rest of the season and the upcoming World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury, dealing a major blow to Tottenham’s survival hopes.
The Netherlands international was stretchered off during Spurs’ 1-0 win over Wolves after collapsing with a knee problem following a collision. The club later confirmed he had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Simons is set to undergo surgery in the coming weeks before beginning a lengthy rehabilitation process.
In a message on social media, the 23-year-old expressed his devastation at the setback.
“My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it,” he said. “Honestly, I’m heartbroken. All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now that’s been taken away, along with the World Cup.”
Tottenham confirmed the diagnosis in a statement, adding their support for the midfielder during his recovery.
“Everyone at the club sends Xavi our love and support,” the statement read. “We will be with him every step of the way.”
The injury is a significant setback for Spurs, who are battling to avoid relegation and have already been hit by multiple absences, including captain Cristian Romero and winger Mohammed Kudus.
Simons had begun to show signs of his quality in recent weeks and was expected to play a key role under head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
Instead, he will miss the final four league matches as Tottenham attempt to close the gap on safety and avoid a first relegation in nearly five decades.
“It’ll take time to come to terms with this,” Simons added. “But I’ll continue to support the team and work towards coming back stronger.”
Tottenham now face a critical end to the season without one of their key attacking options, as they fight to secure their Premier League status.
