Slot Says Liverpool Bond ‘Goes Beyond Football’ In Emotional Farewell
- Arne Slot has thanked Liverpool supporters in an emotional farewell letter following his dismissal as head coach.
- The Dutchman described winning the Premier League title as “beyond special” and praised the club’s unique connection with its fans.
- Slot also paid tribute to the Liverpool community’s response to recent tragedies and expressed confidence in the club’s future.
Arne Slot has said his connection with Liverpool and its supporters “goes beyond football” after bidding an emotional farewell following his departure from Anfield.
The Dutchman was dismissed as Liverpool head coach on Saturday, bringing an end to a two-year spell in charge that included delivering only the club’s second league title in 35 years.
Despite guiding Liverpool to Premier League glory 12 months ago, a disappointing title defence that culminated in a fifth-place finish ultimately cost Slot his position.
In an open letter addressed to supporters and published by the Liverpool Echo, Slot reflected on his time at the club and thanked fans for the support he received throughout his tenure.
“The connection we share goes beyond football, beyond European nights under the Anfield lights or the sound of You’ll Never Walk Alone being sung from The Kop,” Slot wrote.
“You made me feel welcome from the start and helped me on the path. That is something I cherish.”
Slot described Liverpool’s title-winning campaign as one of the proudest moments of his career and said the achievement carried extra significance because supporters were able to celebrate alongside the team.
The 2020 title triumph came during the COVID-19 pandemic, preventing fans from fully experiencing the occasion.
For Slot, lifting the trophy in front of packed stands and celebrating with supporters made the achievement even more memorable.
“Winning the Premier League title was beyond special,” he said, adding that sharing the moment with supporters made it even more meaningful.
The former manager also reflected on some of the difficult moments experienced by the city during his time in charge.
Slot referenced the shocking incident during Liverpool’s title celebrations when a vehicle driven by Paul Doyle struck supporters on Water Street, leaving 134 people injured.
Doyle was later sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison after pleading guilty to multiple offences.
“I was privileged to witness first-hand your spirit of compassion and unity,” Slot wrote.
“It is a spirit that has carried this city through difficult moments before, and one that I hope will help bring the justice and accountability so many have campaigned for over many years.”
Slot also paid tribute to the Liverpool community following the death of forward Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car accident.
He described the reaction of supporters as extraordinary and said the tributes paid to the Portuguese international would remain with him forever.
“The love, compassion and support shown by the Liverpool family was extraordinary,” Slot said.
“The way the supporters honoured Diogo will stay with me forever.”
Alongside his message to supporters, Slot thanked the players, coaching staff and the club’s ownership group for their contributions during his tenure.
“It has been a pleasure working with you all,” he wrote.
“Liverpool’s 20th league title belongs to all of us and it will remain an important chapter in its history. For that we should all be proud.”
Despite the circumstances surrounding his departure, Slot expressed confidence that Liverpool remain well positioned for future success.
He highlighted the foundations established by the current squad and pointed to a new generation of players ready to make their mark.
“I leave with complete confidence in what lies ahead,” Slot said.
“The players who have given so much to this club, who have upheld its values and helped create so many unforgettable moments, have built foundations that will endure.
“At the same time, a new generation is emerging, ready to write its own story and embrace the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt.
“Change is part of football, but I know that this club will continue to make its people proud.”
Slot departs Anfield having delivered a league title and forged a strong bond with supporters, leaving behind a message centred on gratitude, unity and belief in Liverpool’s future.
