  • Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has been charged by the Football Association following its investigation into the club’s ‘Spygate’ scandal.
  • The FA alleges Eckert authorised or directed the observation of Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough training sessions before league fixtures.
  • Southampton say they will cooperate fully with the investigation while continuing to support their head coach.

Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has been charged by the Football Association following its investigation into the Championship ‘Spygate’ scandal that overshadowed the club’s promotion campaign.

The charges come after Southampton were expelled from the Championship play-offs and handed a four-point deduction for the 2026-27 season after admitting to three separate incidents involving the observation of opposition training sessions.

On Wednesday, the FA confirmed Eckert has been charged with three alleged breaches of Rule E3.1 relating to misconduct between December 2025 and May 2026.

In a statement, the governing body alleged that Eckert “acted in an improper manner and/or brought the game into disrepute” by directing or authorising the observation of training sessions involving Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough before fixtures against Southampton.

The FA has given Eckert until July 28 to respond to the charges.

The investigation followed the discovery of a Southampton staff member observing a Middlesbrough training session before the Championship play-off semifinal between the clubs. Southampton later admitted two further breaches involving Oxford United and Ipswich Town.

Despite those incidents, Southampton failed to win any of the three matches connected to the admitted observations.

The club responded to the latest development by confirming it will cooperate with the FA while continuing to support its head coach.

“Southampton Football Club will cooperate fully and openly with the Football Association in relation to these charges,” the club said in a statement.

“The club remains fully supportive of Tonda and his staff as we continue working towards our ambition of returning to the Premier League.”

Eckert accepted responsibility for the situation in a statement released in early June, shortly after an independent EFL arbitration panel published its written reasons for imposing sanctions on the club.

The panel concluded Southampton had carried out “a contrived and determined plan from top down to gain a competitive advantage.”

According to the written findings, junior members of staff felt significant pressure to carry out observations requested by senior coaches.

One analyst involved in the Middlesbrough incident reportedly feared refusing the assignment could damage his career or even cost him his job.

The panel stated the staff member felt “under extreme pressure” because of the importance of the Championship play-off tie and believed declining the request could have serious consequences for his future at the club.

Despite the findings, Southampton owner Dragan Solak has publicly backed Eckert and insists the club has no intention of dismissing him.

Speaking after the sanctions were announced, Solak said he believed Eckert was unaware he was breaching competition rules.

“I believe Tonda when he says he did not know it was against the rules,” Solak said.

“My opinion, and the opinion of the board, is that he deserves our support.”

“I believe he is a very talented manager and deserves a second chance.”

The FA disciplinary process will now determine whether any further sanctions are imposed on Eckert personally as Southampton continue preparations for the new Championship season under the shadow of one of English football’s most controversial disciplinary cases in recent years.
