- Result extends unbeaten league run and lifts Saints into play off places
- Manager Tonda Eckert praises focus following FA Cup success
Southampton continued their strong run of form with a 5-1 victory against Wrexham, strengthening their position in the Championship play
The visitors took control early, with Kuryu Matsuki opening the scoring after being set up by Finn Azaz. Flynn Downes added a second soon after as Southampton capitalised on defensive uncertainty.
Wrexham responded through Josh Windass, who reduced the deficit with a composed finish. The momentum shifted again when Cyle Larin restored Southampton’s advantage with a breakaway goal.
Further goals from Ross Stewart and Azaz secured a comprehensive result, marking a fifth consecutive win in all competitions. The victory also extended the team’s unbeaten league run and moved them into the top six.
Tonda Eckert said the squad’s focus has been consistent, with preparation remaining the priority as the season enters its final phase. He added that maintaining rhythm across a demanding schedule will be key to sustaining results.
Southampton’s recent form reflects a significant improvement since Eckert’s appointment, with the team climbing from the lower end of the table into promotion contention.
For Wrexham, the defeat represents a setback in their own promotion bid. Manager Phil Parkinson said the performance fell below expected standards and acknowledged that early lapses proved decisive.
Wrexham now sit just outside the play off places, with the result increasing pressure ahead of the remaining fixtures.
