Virgil van Dijk has apologised to supporters after Liverpool were eliminated from the FA Cup following a 4-0 defeat by Manchester City.

Liverpool’s hopes of securing domestic silverware ended at the quarter final stage after a result shaped by a decisive spell around half time. The match remained level during the opening period before Van Dijk conceded a penalty for a challenge on Nico O’Reilly, which was converted by Erling Haaland.

City extended their lead with three further goals in a short period, with Haaland completing his hat trick during an 18 minute phase that determined the outcome.

Van Dijk said the team’s second half display fell below expected standards and accepted responsibility on behalf of the squad. He stated that the players failed to respond after falling behind and acknowledged that the level of performance would be difficult for supporters to accept.

He added that the responsibility for results lies with the players on the pitch, while recognising the role of Arne Slot as head coach. Van Dijk said the squad must respond quickly ahead of the next fixture.

Liverpool face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, with the tie representing a significant test following the FA Cup exit. Van Dijk said the team must prepare mentally for a demanding opponent.

He also referenced the importance of collective cohesion within the squad, noting that consistency has been lacking during the season. The defender said performances have been affected in matches where intensity levels have not been maintained.

Liverpool’s league position leaves qualification for next season’s Champions League uncertain. A Premier League fixture against Fulham sits between the two European matches.

Van Dijk said the team must produce a strong response in the coming games if they are to improve the outcome of the campaign. He added that players must assess their own performances as the season enters its closing phase.
