Wrexham Fight Back to Beat Sheffield United in Crucial Playoff Boost
• Wrexham secured a 2-1 comeback win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane
• Assistant manager Steve Parkin called it one of the biggest wins under Phil Parkinson
• Victory keeps Wrexham level on points with sixth-placed Southampton
Wrexham assistant manager Steve Parkin described their 2-1 comeback victory over Sheffield United as one of the most important results of Phil Parkinson’s tenure.
Wrexham responded to a recent dip in form by overturning a second-half deficit at Bramall Lane to keep their Championship playoff hopes alive.
Sheffield United had taken the lead through Andre Brooks early in the second half, but Wrexham hit back through Josh Windass, who was set up by Sam Smith against his former rivals.
Smith then scored the winner in the 78th minute, sparking celebrations among the visiting players and staff.
“In the five years we’ve been here now, that’s in our top 10 of the games we probably needed to win,” Parkin said. “A few people wrote us off after the Watford game, but that was a big effort from the lads psychologically to turn it around.”
The result keeps Wrexham level on points with Southampton in sixth place as they continue their push for a fourth consecutive promotion.
“We just want to be part of the party at the end of the year,” Parkin added. “We want to be in and around the playoffs.”
For Sheffield United, the defeat extends a poor run of form, leaving them 13 points adrift of the playoff places.
Manager Chris Wilder said his side failed to capitalise on their dominance.
“Wrexham found a way to win and we found a way to lose,” Wilder said. “We had control and chances, but we have to take them.”
