Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim praised his team’s resilience and fighting spirit after they earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw against league leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. The result came as a surprise to many, given United’s recent run of poor form, which saw them suffer five defeats in eight Premier League games since Amorim took charge in November.

Prior to the match, Amorim had acknowledged the challenges facing his team, admitting that his players were “anxious – sometimes afraid” due to the club’s current struggles. However, the Portuguese manager’s message seemed to resonate with his squad, as they put in a determined performance to secure a point against their fierce rivals.

Speaking after the game, Amorim highlighted the significance of the result, saying, “Yes, the derby win at Manchester City may be United’s best result under the Portuguese, but this was the most complete display. There was a freakish element to that win at Etihad Stadium, two late goals pinching the points at the end of a dreadful game. Here, with the Kop expecting Liverpool to over-run this United side in reduced circumstances, Amorim’s men stood up to be counted. No fear. No anxiety.”

United took the lead through Lisandro Martinez, but Liverpool fought back with goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah. However, Amad Diallo’s late equalizer ensured that the points were shared. Amorim praised his team’s never-say-die attitude, stating, “If Harry Maguire had not shot over the top of an open goal with seconds of seven added minutes left, Amorim and United could have been celebrating a landmark first win at Anfield since Wayne Rooney struck in 2016. For all that, this was the biggest indication yet that Amorim is having an impact, that his messages are finally getting across.”

Despite the positive result, United captain Bruno Fernandes expressed his frustration with the team’s inconsistency, questioning why they cannot perform at the same level every week. “If we show this level at Liverpool, first in the Premier League, then why can’t we do this everywhere,” said Fernandes. “We have been criticised and fairly. Our position in the table says it all. We have lost too many points.”

Fernandes, who put in an outstanding performance in midfield, added, “I’m pretty upset. It frustrates me and finally I did a proper performance. We know how tough it is to play Liverpool, but we put in a real effort and played with some passion and heart. We can’t stop here. We have to bring this heart, passion and frustration to the next game. If we can do it at Anfield, we have to do it everywhere.”

Amorim echoed Fernandes’ sentiments, emphasizing the importance of consistency and fighting spirit. “It’s really clear. When we are focused, when we fight for every ball, when we suffer, when we are tired when the game is finished, we are a good team,” he said. “If we don’t do that every time we are going to lose games. This is now clear to everybody.”

As Manchester United look to turn their season around, the performance at Anfield serves as a reminder of the potential within the squad. However, Amorim and his players must now build on this result and prove that they can maintain the same level of commitment and determination in their upcoming fixtures…
