Thomas Frank Commited to Long-Term Spurs Project

When Thomas Frank faced the cameras for the first time as Tottenham Hotspur manager since arriving in June, he offered a smile, a joke—then made his intentions clear.

Frank quipped that he took the job to “[get] a little bit more risk in [his] daily life”, having never been dismissed from a post before. Levity aside, his challenge is serious: to bring consistency to a club that’s changed head coach four times since 2021.

“I like the ambitions,” said the Danish manager. “Everything I do—every decision I take—is about the long term. It’s not just about surviving the next 18 months.”

Under his predecessors, stability proved elusive. Nuno Espirito Santo lasted under half a season. Antonio Conte held the position for 16 months. Ange Postecoglou, who delivered Spurs’ first trophy in 17 years with a Europa League triumph, departed after two years.

Frank, 51, backs that success as a foundation.

“[Winning the Europa League] gave them that fantastic trophy this club deserved and needed,” he said. “My aim is to add to that.”

Leaving Brentford, Frank said, was a personal trial. He was the Premier League’s second-longest tenured manager at the time, having brought Brentford up to the top flight in 2021 and kept them there.

“It was very difficult and very easy at the same time,” he admitted. “I go ‘all in’ on everything—friends, work, relationships—and Brentford meant a lot to me. But when a club like Tottenham calls, how can you say no?”

The new manager also addressed questions about two prominent players whose futures remain unresolved—club captain Son Heung-min and defender Cristian Romero.

“Two top players,” Frank noted. “Sonny, 10 years at the club, finally got a deserved trophy. Romero, World Cup winner, Europa League winner, Copa America winner. They’re both very important to us. Both have been training well and will feature Saturday.”

He chose not to engage in speculation regarding either player’s future amidst interest from other clubs. Nor did he comment on Spurs’ move for Morgan Gibbs-White, amid suggestions that the club may have violated a confidentiality clause tied to the £60m release fee in his Nottingham Forest deal.

“I won’t talk about players who aren’t mine,” Frank said.

Son has just a year left on his current deal and remains a target for clubs in Saudi Arabia and MLS. Romero, meanwhile, continues to be linked with Atletico Madrid. Neither appears set to leave before the club’s pre-season tour of southeast Asia, where Son is expected to play a central role due to his market appeal.

Still, Frank wouldn’t guarantee they’ll be part of Spurs’ long-term squad plans.

This is a shift project at Spurs. For the Dane in the dugout, the horizon stretches beyond fleeting contracts and short-termism.
