O’Neill reaches 1000 games as Celtic return to European spotlight

Martin O’Neill will reach a remarkable milestone when Celtic host Stuttgart in the Europa League knockout play off first leg at Parkhead, with the occasion marking the 1000th game of his managerial career.

Few figures are more closely associated with Celtic’s modern European history than O’Neill, the man who guided the club to the UEFA Cup final in 2003, their only continental final in the past 56 years. It is fitting that such a landmark arrives on another major European night in Glasgow.

The 73 year-old Northern Irishman returned to Celtic in October following a call from principal shareholder Dermot Desmond, six years after stepping away from management. At that stage, O’Neill believed his career had concluded on 981 matches, only for an interim spell to evolve into a permanent return following the brief tenure of Wilfried Nancy.

O’Neill admitted he was taken by surprise when the League Managers Association informed him earlier this week that he had entered their Hall of Fame 1000 Club.

“I had genuinely never counted the games,” O’Neill said. “When the LMA told me, it was a real surprise. It is a great honour and something I am very proud of. Celtic deserve a huge part of that because without this club, it would not have happened.”

The landmark will place O’Neill alongside an elite group of managers including Brian Clough, Alex Ferguson, Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola. He is due to be formally inducted at the LMA Annual Awards dinner in May.

Sunday’s dramatic stoppage time win at Kilmarnock marked O’Neill’s 300th victory in charge of Celtic, more than he has recorded with any other club. By the end of the season, he is certain to surpass 1014 matches, with further progress in the Europa League and Scottish Cup potentially adding to that tally.

Attention now turns to Stuttgart, whose visit brings back memories of Celtic’s 2003 European run, when O’Neill’s side eliminated the German club in the last 16 before reaching the final.

“Stuttgart were an outstanding team then and they remain a very strong side now,” O’Neill said. “We have watched them closely and the reports match what we have seen ourselves. They are a really fine team.”

Despite the magnitude of the occasion, O’Neill remains focused on the task at hand, emphasising the importance of creating momentum ahead of next week’s second leg in Germany.

“These are the nights you want in European football. It will be very challenging but we want to put ourselves in a good position going into the second game.”

Asked whether a successful end to the campaign could tempt him into extending his stay at Celtic, O’Neill was cautious.

“That is too far in the future for me. Right now, the focus is entirely on these matches and helping the team finish the season strongly.”

For O’Neill, few stages could be more appropriate for such a milestone than Parkhead under the lights, with Celtic once again seeking to carve out a memorable European chapter.
