Matheus Cunha has thrown his support behind Michael Carrick to become permanent head coach of Manchester United after guiding the team back into the Champions League.

Carrick, a former United midfielder, was appointed on an interim basis following Ruben Amorim’s departure in January and has since exceeded expectations. A dramatic 3-2 victory over Liverpool confirmed qualification for Europe’s top competition with three games to spare.

Speaking after the match, Cunha said Carrick had reintroduced qualities reminiscent of the club’s most successful era under Alex Ferguson.

“I think he has like the magic with these Ferguson times,” Cunha said. “He came and brought it to us, taught us how it was. To be part of everything that he did is a pleasure, and of course I think he deserves it.”

Carrick’s deep understanding of the club was a key factor in his appointment, with United seeking stability and continuity during a turbulent period. His impact has been reflected in improved performances and results, including a strong run that secured Champions League football.

Cunha also highlighted Carrick’s influence on the squad, praising his coaching style and ability to instil confidence in the players.

“What he did, he’s full of confidence in the group,” Cunha added. “How he teaches everyone is amazing.”

Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo echoed similar sentiments, underlining the strong connection between the players and their interim boss.

The Brazilian forward emphasised the importance of returning to Europe’s elite competition, describing it as essential for both the club and its identity.

“Champions League without this club is not the same competition, and this club without Champions League is not the same club,” Cunha said.

Despite the success, Cunha acknowledged that United must continue to push forward and compete for major honours, as they did during Carrick’s playing days.

Meanwhile, Casemiro is expected to leave the club this summer when his contract expires, with Cunha admitting the squad will miss his presence.

“To have this guy in the dressing room is a privilege,” Cunha said. “We will miss him so much.”

Manchester United are continuing their search for a permanent manager, but Carrick’s strong run has made him a leading contender to take the role full-time.
