Aston Villa Seal Champions League Return as Liverpool’s Top-Five Hopes Suffer Blow
- Aston Villa secured Champions League qualification with an impressive 4-2 victory over Liverpool.
- Ollie Watkins scored twice as Unai Emery’s side guaranteed a top-five Premier League finish.
- Liverpool’s place in next season’s Champions League remains uncertain heading into the final weekend.
Aston Villa booked their place in next season’s Champions League after producing a thrilling 4-2 victory over Liverpool at Villa Park on Friday night.
Two goals from Ollie Watkins, alongside strikes from Morgan Rogers and John McGinn, secured the win that guarantees Unai Emery’s side a top-five Premier League finish and another season among Europe’s elite.
For Liverpool, however, the result leaves serious work still to do.
Arne Slot’s side remain fifth and now head into the final weekend still vulnerable in the race for Champions League qualification, with Bournemouth and Brighton both mathematically capable of closing the gap.
Villa entered the match already carrying the confidence of a remarkable campaign and now head into Wednesday’s Europa League final against Freiburg with momentum, belief and their Champions League future already secured.
It marks another major achievement in Emery’s transformative reign at Villa Park.
Just two seasons ago, Villa returned to Europe’s top competition for the first time in more than four decades. Now they are preparing for both Champions League football and the chance to win a first major trophy in 30 years.
Liverpool actually began the stronger side.
Cody Gakpo had an early goal ruled out for offside, while Dominik Szoboszlai forced Emiliano Martínez into a difficult save from distance as the visitors controlled much of the opening period.
But Villa gradually settled into the contest and struck first three minutes before halftime.
Morgan Rogers finished calmly beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili after a cleverly worked corner routine opened space inside the box.
Virgil van Dijk brought Liverpool level shortly after the restart with a powerful header, but the equaliser only seemed to energise the home side.
Villa’s attacking transitions repeatedly exposed Liverpool’s defence as the game opened up.
Watkins had one effort disallowed for offside before quickly making amends. After a costly slip from Szoboszlai triggered a rapid counterattack, the England forward finished clinically to restore Villa’s lead.
He struck again in the 73rd minute following a chaotic sequence inside the Liverpool penalty area. Mamardashvili produced two outstanding saves, but Watkins reacted quickest to side-foot home from close range.
It continued a stunning run of form for the striker, who has now scored six goals in his last seven Premier League appearances.
Villa continued to threaten throughout. Emiliano Buendía rattled the crossbar from long range, while teenager Rio Ngumoha struck the woodwork for Liverpool at the opposite end.
John McGinn then sealed the victory late on with a superb finish into the far corner after another flowing Villa attack.
Van Dijk added a second for Liverpool in stoppage time, but by then the damage had already been done.
Slot’s side looked physically drained and defensively fragile for long periods, raising fresh concerns ahead of the final game of the season against Brentford.
Villa, meanwhile, travel to Manchester City on the final day with their Champions League place secure and belief continuing to grow around one of the club’s most successful modern seasons.
