Erling Haaland tells Manchester City to use title pain as fuel after Arsenal triumph
- Erling Haaland says Manchester City must channel their frustration after losing the Premier League title to Arsenal.
- City’s 1-1 draw at Bournemouth confirmed Arsenal as champions for the first time since 2004.
- Haaland insisted winning two domestic trophies is not enough without the league title.
Erling Haaland has challenged Manchester City to turn the frustration of another failed Premier League title bid into motivation for next season after Arsenal were crowned champions on Tuesday night.
City’s hopes of taking the title race to the final day disappeared after a 1-1 draw away to AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
Haaland rescued a point deep into stoppage time with his 27th league goal of the season after Junior Kroupi had given Bournemouth a first-half lead, but Pep Guardiola’s side could not find the late winner they desperately needed.
The result officially handed Arsenal their first league title in 22 years and left City reflecting on another campaign where they ultimately fell short in the Premier League.
“Every game in the Premier League is difficult, we tried, it wasn’t enough,” Haaland told City Studios.
“The whole club should use this as motivation now. We should be angry, we should feel a fire inside our belly because it’s not good enough.
“It’s gone two years now, it feels like forever.
“We’re going to do everything we can, everyone that will be here next season, to win the league.”
City travelled to the south coast just three days after beating Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley and looked physically drained for long periods against Bournemouth.
Guardiola heavily rotated his side during the closing weeks of the season as City attempted to compete on multiple fronts, but the relentless schedule appeared to catch up with them at a decisive moment.
Despite missing out on the title, City will still finish the season with two trophies after also winning the Carabao Cup earlier in the campaign.
Haaland acknowledged that success, but admitted it does little to soften the disappointment of surrendering the league crown.
“Everything’s relative; it was better than last season,” he said.
“I felt that we could still push a little bit more in the league but it’s over now.
“We win two trophies, which is important, but we want the Premier League as well.”
Bournemouth created several chances to put the game beyond City before Haaland’s late equaliser and the Norway striker admitted the circumstances made the fixture especially demanding.
“It’s never easy to come here, especially after a final against a really good team,” he added.
“Finals are always more emotional, it’s always more difficult because you automatically give more.
“The schedule is tough. There are no excuses. But it’s not easy to come to Bournemouth after playing at Wembley in the FA Cup final.”
Uncertainty also continues to surround Guardiola’s future after fresh speculation emerged over whether the City manager could leave the club following Sunday’s final game of the season against Aston Villa.
The Spaniard, who still has one year remaining on his contract, offered little clarity after the match as Arsenal celebrated ending City’s grip on the Premier League trophy.
