  • England captain Harry Kane has confirmed he played golf with US President Donald Trump in Palm Beach 18 months ago, calling it a “pretty surreal experience.”
  • Trump praised Kane earlier in the week, telling reporters: “I think Kane is a great player. I played golf with him and I like him a lot. He’s a good golfer too. He’s really great.”
  • Kane also revealed that David Beckham spoke to the England squad at Inter Miami’s facilities ahead of Saturday’s quarterfinal against Norway.

Kane Impressed by 80-Year-Old Trump’s Game as England Prepare for Norway Showdown

Harry Kane has lifted the lid on an unlikely friendship with Donald Trump, confirming that the US President invited him for a round of golf in Florida and that the 80-year-old’s game left him genuinely impressed.

Trump let the story slip earlier this week when he told reporters he had spent time on the course with the England captain. “I think Kane is a great player. I played golf with him and I like him a lot. He’s a good golfer too. He’s really great,” Trump said.

Speaking ahead of England’s World Cup quarterfinal against Norway on Saturday, Kane filled in the details and admitted that the whole experience still feels slightly unreal. “I played all right to be honest, but 18 months ago he invited me to play when I was down in Palm Beach,” Kane said.

“So when the president invites you somewhere, it was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him and obviously play golf with him.”

The Bayern Munich striker, who is a keen golfer away from the pitch, said he was taken aback by how well Trump played at the age of 80. “His golf is pretty good, to be honest with you. I hope I can play golf as good as him when I’m his age, that’s for sure. A unique experience, but I was just grateful that he invited me to play,” Kane said.

The 32-year-old was speaking at England’s training base at Inter Miami’s facilities in Fort Lauderdale, where another high-profile figure had dropped in to offer his support. David Beckham, who co-owns the MLS club, attended Friday’s session alongside sons Romeo and Cruz and spoke to the squad in the gym before the players took to the field.

Kane, who has stayed in regular contact with Beckham throughout the tournament, revealed what the 115-cap England legend told them. “He just wished us luck. After most games, he messages me, and we stay in touch,” Kane said.

“He’s a big England fan. We all know how much it meant for him to represent England and be captain and play the way he did every time he wore the shirt, so he was there to support us.”

The current captain made a point of acknowledging the gesture of Beckham opening up his club’s training ground to the squad. “Obviously, we were using his home, the home that he built, so we appreciate him doing that for us,” Kane said.

“It was good to catch up with him, and for some of the other lads to have a chat with him. He’s an England legend,” Kane said.
