  • Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading contender to become Liverpool’s next head coach following Arne Slot’s dismissal.
  • The former Bournemouth manager is available immediately after guiding the club to a historic Europa League qualification.
  • Liverpool’s hierarchy view Iraola as a proven Premier League coach whose attacking style aligns with the club’s long-term vision.

Andoni Iraola has emerged as the frontrunner to become Liverpool’s next head coach following the departure of Arne Slot, sources have told ESPN.

Liverpool are assessing a number of potential candidates after dismissing Slot on Saturday, but Iraola is currently viewed as the leading option to take charge at Anfield.

The 43-year-old is available immediately after leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season, having overseen the most successful league campaign in the club’s history.

Under Iraola, Bournemouth secured qualification for the Europa League for the first time, earning widespread praise for their aggressive and energetic style of play.

Liverpool’s decision-makers are expected to conduct a thorough review of the managerial market before making a final appointment. However, several factors have placed Iraola firmly at the front of the queue.

One of the key reasons behind Slot’s dismissal was Liverpool’s desire to return to a more intense, high-pressing style of football. Iraola’s Bournemouth side became known for exactly those qualities, making him a natural fit for the club’s footballing philosophy.

His availability is another major advantage, allowing Liverpool to move quickly should they decide to proceed with an appointment.

Iraola also has a strong working relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who played a significant role in bringing the Spanish coach to Bournemouth in 2023 while serving in a similar executive position at the south coast club.

That existing connection is understood to be a major factor in Liverpool’s interest.

Financial considerations are not expected to present any obstacles. Sources have indicated that Iraola’s reported £10 million-per-year salary expectations, which Bournemouth were unable to meet, would be within Liverpool’s budget.

Slot was earning a similar salary package during his time at Anfield.

Liverpool’s admiration for Iraola is not new. Sources said the club had already identified him as a potential long-term managerial option during his successful spell with Spanish side Rayo Vallecano several years ago.

His work in both Spain and England has reinforced the view within the club that he is one of the most promising coaches in European football.

While other candidates remain under consideration, Iraola currently holds a significant advantage.

VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness and Lens head coach Pierre Sage are both admired by Liverpool’s hierarchy and have been discussed internally as potential options.

However, Iraola’s experience in the Premier League, combined with his successful relationship with Hughes and his tactical suitability, has elevated him above the competition at this stage of the process.

Liverpool are expected to continue evaluating candidates in the coming days before making a final decision on who will lead the club into the next chapter following Slot’s departure.

For now, Iraola appears to be the man best positioned to take one of the biggest jobs in European football.
