Koeman’s Selection Gamble Pays Off as Netherlands Run Riot in Houston

The Netherlands put on a five-star display to demolish Sweden 5-1 and leapfrog Graham Potter’s side at the top of Group F. Braces from Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo did the damage in an all-European encounter that was effectively settled within 54 minutes, with Crysencio Summerville adding a fifth late on to cap a devastating Oranje performance in the Houston heat.

Ronald Koeman had sprung something of a surprise by selecting Brobbey ahead of Summerville, who had scored in the opening 2-2 draw with Japan, but the decision was vindicated inside five minutes. Brobbey laid the ball off to Tijjani Reijnders, who swept it left for Gakpo to send in a low cross, and the Sunderland striker poked home at the near post. The second goal was almost a mirror image. Denzel Dumfries crossed low from the right in the 17th minute and Brobbey again prodded home, sliding in to divert the ball past Kristoffer Nordfeldt. Before this tournament, the 23-year-old had scored only once for his country.

Sweden came to life after the first hydration break and piled on pressure in search of a route back into the match. They thought they had a goal when Gustaf Lagerbielke headed in Benjamin Nygren’s free kick, but the celebrations were cut short by the offside flag, with Lagerbielke one of several Swedish players in illegal positions. The interval arrived at the worst possible moment for Potter’s side.

Any faint Swedish hopes of a second-half recovery were extinguished within eight minutes of the restart. Summerville, introduced for Donyell Malen at halftime, sent a low cross into the box that Brobbey stretched for but could not quite reach. Gakpo, arriving at the back post, was left with a simple finish to make it 3-0 in the 47th minute. Seven minutes later, the Netherlands punished a mistake from Alexander Isak with a rapid counter. Summerville laid the ball off for Gakpo, who cut inside from the left and crashed a trademark drive from the edge of the area into the net. It was Gakpo’s fifth World Cup goal in just seven appearances, leaving him two behind Johnny Rep’s all-time Dutch record at the finals.

Substitute Anthony Elanga offered Sweden some consolation just before the hour, running onto a through ball from Isak and clipping a superb finish beyond Bart Verbruggen. It was a moment of quality from the winger, but the four-goal deficit was restored in the 89th minute when the impressive Summerville swept home an emphatic right-foot strike from the edge of the box.

Brobbey spoke about the team spirit driving the Dutch performance. “It feels amazing to make a direct impact and I think as a team we played very well. I think everybody has a good bond with each other and we’ll fight for each other as well, that’s the main thing,” the striker said.

Potter accepted the result with characteristic composure. “Sometimes you have to have these experiences. I didn’t think it was that kind of game, but we have to learn from it. We were playing against a good team. They hurt us in the wide areas. The first goal was from a long ball we didn’t deal with very well,” the Sweden coach said.

Sweden captain Victor Lindelof echoed his manager’s assessment while acknowledging the quality of the opposition. “The result is what it is, but I think we did some good things today that we can take with us, and obviously, another few things that we can learn from. I think the goals that we conceded are a little bit too easy. But then again, if you are not in the right position, if you lose half a meter, one meter against players like this, then they’re going to punish you. That’s exactly what happened today,” Lindelof said.

The Netherlands move to four points at the top of Group F, one ahead of Sweden on three. Japan and Tunisia were still to play their second match later in the day, with both sides knowing that the group remains wide open heading into the final round of fixtures. Potter’s side, who had beaten Tunisia 5-1 in their opening game, will need to regroup quickly after a chastening afternoon in Texas.
