Moise Kean Will Miss Como’s Biggest Game of the Season After Cesc Fabregas Clashed With Italy’s Doctors

  • Como forward Moise Kean will sit out seven to ten days after an MRI scan confirmed a fitness problem picked up on international duty with Italy.
  • Como boss Cesc Fabregas says Kean was played for 90 minutes while already carrying a knock from an earlier match against Belgium, and wants better communication between club and country.
  • Italy’s chief medical officer, Angelo De Carli, has rejected that version of events, insisting club doctors were kept informed throughout the camp.

A forward comes home with a scan that tells a different story to the one the national team gave his club

Moise Kean left Italy’s October camp the same way he arrived: as the country’s first-choice forward, trusted to lead the line across a brutal run of four matches in eleven days. He came home to Como with an injury that will keep him out for well over a week, and a manager who says the whole situation should never have happened.

Cesc Fabregas did not hold back. Speaking ahead of Como’s high-stakes Serie A fixture with Roma, the former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder laid out a timeline that put Italy’s handling of his striker under real scrutiny.

“He’ll be out for a week or ten days. He took a knock in his first match against Belgium. Communication between the Federation and the club should improve, given that he then played 90 minutes of another match injured, as the MRI scan he had yesterday showed. Now he has to work separately,” Fabregas said.

Read plainly, that is a club manager saying the national team let a player compete on a bad knock for a full match, only for the full extent of the damage to show up on a scan once he was back under Como’s own medical staff. For a club fighting for points in Serie A, losing its top forward for Roma on the back of an international window is exactly the nightmare every coach dreads when a call-up letter lands.

Italy’s doctor says the lines of contact were open the whole time

The Italian federation was not willing to let the claim stand unanswered. Angelo De Carli, the national team’s chief medical officer, issued his own detailed response, insisting the suggestion that Como’s medical staff were left in the dark simply is not accurate.

“To monitor the condition of the players who are called up, the national team’s medical staff constantly keep the club doctors updated, and have frequent contact with them before, during and after the training camp. That is what happened during the last international window, spanning September and October,” De Carli said, as reported by Sky Sport Italia.

So there are now two accounts of the same set of days, and they do not line up. Fabregas says his player was managed carelessly once he picked up an early knock against Belgium. De Carli says his department never stopped talking to Como’s medics. Somewhere in that gap sits a forward who is now working alone on a recovery programme instead of training with his teammates.

What actually happened to Kean across the camp

Kean featured for Italy against both Belgium and France across the window, carrying the knock from that opening fixture against Belgium through at least one more full appearance. By the time Roberto Mancini’s side reached their final match of the window, against Turkiye in Bologna, the problem had worsened enough that Kean could not take part. He returned to Como’s training ground, underwent a fresh scan, and was told the issue would keep him out for roughly a week to ten days.

That timing is brutal for Como. Roma away, or at home, is the kind of fixture a mid-table Serie A club builds a week around, and Fabregas will now have to find a way through it without the forward he has built his attack on this season. The club’s statement of frustration was not really about Roma, though. It was about a pattern that keeps repeating itself whenever a cluster of fixtures gets squeezed into an international break.

A familiar argument between clubs and countries

This is not a new fight. Club managers across Europe have spent years asking national federations to treat player workload with more caution once a squad is out of their hands, and national federations have spent just as long insisting their own medical departments are careful and well staffed. What made this one sharper is the detail: a named scan, a named timeframe, and a manager willing to put his frustration on record rather than keep it behind closed doors.

Italy’s own fixture list did Kean no favours. Four matches in eleven days is a heavy ask for any forward, let alone one nursing a knock from the very first game of that run. Fabregas’s case is that once a player picks up an injury on international duty, the people managing him in the days that follow owe his club a clear account of exactly what he can and cannot do. De Carli’s case is that his staff gave Como’s doctors precisely that account, at every stage.

Neither side is accusing the other of anything beyond a breakdown in how information moved, or did not move, between two medical teams working with the same player in the same short window. But that is often how these disputes start, long before they turn into anything bigger. For now, Kean begins a recovery program away from first-team training, Como prepare for Roma without their main forward, and Italy’s federation will hope the next international window does not produce another scan that contradicts what a manager was told.

Kean is expected back within the next week to ten days. Whether that is quick enough to save Como’s result against Roma is a different question, and not one either side can answer from a treatment room.
