Arsenal Agree £75m Fee With Newcastle for Captain Bruno Guimaraes

Arsenal have agreed a £75m fee with Newcastle United for captain Bruno Guimaraes, with the Brazil international given permission to travel for a medical. An opening bid was turned down earlier in the window, but the 28-year-old now looks set to complete one of the biggest moves of the summer and join the Premier League champions.

Guimaraes told Newcastle bosses earlier in the summer that he wanted to join Arsenal if a suitable offer arrived. He joined the Magpies from Lyon in 2022 for £40m and leaves having made 195 appearances and scored 31 goals, a run that turned him into one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders and, eventually, the club’s captain.

A Deal Newcastle Fought to Avoid

Newcastle found the process bizarre. Arsenal, via agents, drew the negotiation out by going weeks without direct contact between the clubs, a delay that left Newcastle’s hierarchy puzzled given how clear Guimaraes had already been about his wishes. Talks began in June with mentions of fees in the £40m to £45m range, numbers Newcastle refused outright.

Newcastle did not want to sell their captain and would have rejected any offer had Guimaraes indicated he wanted to stay. He did not. He was clear and respectful in telling the club this represented his last realistic chance to compete for major titles, and conversations aimed at changing his mind did not shift his position.

Newcastle set their terms accordingly: a fee among the highest ever paid anywhere for a player over the age of 28, or no deal at all. Arsenal’s camp repeatedly signalled they would not go near that figure, so Newcastle continued to say no. Only Guimaraes’ insistence that he wanted to leave, combined with Arsenal eventually meeting Newcastle’s valuation, moved the deal forward.

Conducted on Newcastle’s Terms

Newcastle also insisted the transfer be handled with a level of respect they felt was owed to a departing captain. Guimaraes attended the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain and, in Newcastle’s view, complied with the process throughout. That mattered inside the club, which was determined to avoid a repeat of the standoff with Alexander Isak, who refused to train amid his own move away from St James’ Park.

Newcastle say there have been no fallouts between the club and their captain, and that mutual respect remains intact even as the two sides prepare to part ways. It mirrors how the club handled the departures of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon earlier in the window, both sold only once the player concerned had made a leave request clear and both deals struck at fees Newcastle considered fair reflections of value rather than distress sales.

What Arsenal Get

Sky Sports News reporter Chris Reidy described the scale of what Arsenal are assembling in midfield. “Arsenal’s spine will now be ridiculous,” he said. “Myles Lewis-Skelly was playing incredibly well at the end of last season and started the Champions League final. Martin Zubimendi is a World Cup winner and after some rest he will be ready to go. There’s Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze in the No 10 position alongside the two potential starters in Declan Rice and Guimaraes.”

“It’s a world class midfield and if Arsenal weren’t favourites for the title already, they are now,” Reidy added. “If they can add a left winger and some star quality in that position, which looks like the last piece of the puzzle, it looks like bad news for the rest of the Premier League.”

On the fee itself, Reidy pointed to how the market has shifted this summer. “A few weeks ago, you’d have said this a fair fee but with the last few weeks we’ve had in the transfer window with some really high fees for midfielders, anything under £100m looks good value,” he said. “Guimaraes is a little older but this is Arsenal’s strategy, they want to win now. They have signed some younger players but last summer’s deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres was to win now.”

He added that Guimaraes arrives with no adjustment period required. “Guimaraes won’t need any time to settle in. He is one of the most consistent Premier League midfielders,” Reidy said. “Arsenal won’t make money on him but he might get them closer to the Champions League and he might help them retain the Premier League. The Gunners aren’t looking to the future, they want to win now.”

Where He Fits

Guimaraes is capable of dominating and destroying in midfield battles, but also of scoring and creating, with passing range to match his physical presence. Arriving at Arsenal puts him alongside Rice, Zubimendi, Odegaard, Mikel Merino and Lewis-Skelly, a midfield group already stocked with a World Cup winner and a Champions League finalist before Guimaraes has kicked a ball for the club.

Guimaraes has long made clear he sees himself as an attacking midfielder rather than a pure holding player. Asked about his role back in October 2022, when Eddie Howe was still using him at the base of Newcastle’s midfield, he explained the trade-off he was making for the team. “To be honest, if you ask me this question, I have to say I prefer to play at No 8, but I think my role here, at No 6, is exactly what the team needs,” he said. “It is to take the ball out, to do some passes, to find the wingers and the strikers. I can play both positions, but Eddie has a choice to make and, for me, the most important thing is just to play and to help Newcastle get the three points.”

He also described how he interpreted the No 6 role in an attacking sense rather than a purely defensive one. “With the way we are playing, Dan Burn is at left-back, so he can stay in the middle and I can go and be another player to help the attackers,” he said. The numbers back up that description of himself: even while nominally playing the deeper role, Guimaraes racked up 30 goals and 25 assists in 153 Premier League appearances for Newcastle, a return more typical of a No 8 than a defensive midfielder.

That flexibility is part of what makes him such an attractive option for Mikel Arteta, who has options at Arsenal to play Guimaraes as a deep-lying pivot alongside Rice, freeing Zubimendi, Odegaard or Eze further forward, or to push him into a more advanced role and ask Zubimendi to sit. Guimaraes ended up settling into his favoured No 8 role at Newcastle once Sandro Tonali arrived to anchor the base of midfield, and his production in that position over the past two seasons is exactly why Arsenal were prepared to pay the fee they did.

His arrival caps a summer in which Newcastle have moved on three significant midfield or attacking figures. Tonali left for Tottenham in a £100m club-record deal, while Anthony Gordon joined Barcelona for £69.3m. Should the Guimaraes deal complete as expected, Newcastle will have brought in more than £240m from player sales this summer alone, funding a rebuild that has already added five new signings, including goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga.

For Arsenal, the calculation is simpler. They are the champions, they intend to stay that way, and a captain who does not need time to adjust to Premier League demands is exactly the kind of signing that philosophy calls for. Guimaraes now waits on a medical before completing a move that both a reluctant selling club and an eager buying one have described, in their own ways, as inevitable.

He returned from international duty having already made up his mind, which is why Newcastle’s hierarchy describe his stance as settled rather than a reaction to any single conversation or approach.

It leaves Newcastle needing to replace not just a captain but a player who has been central to the club’s rise over the past four years, going all the way back to his arrival from Lyon in 2022. Whoever eventually wears the armband in his place inherits a dressing room that has changed considerably around him this summer, with Tonali, Gordon and now Guimaraes all moving on within the space of a few weeks.
