Aston Villa end 30-year wait for silverware with Europa League final triumph over Freiburg

Aston Villa lifted their first major trophy in 30 years after a commanding 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the Europa League final in Istanbul.

Unai Emery’s side overwhelmed the German club with a ruthless performance at Tupras Stadium as goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers sealed a famous night for the Birmingham club.

For Villa supporters, it was the release of three decades of frustration and near misses. For Emery, it was further proof that he remains one of European football’s great knockout specialists.

Tielemans opened the scoring before Buendía doubled Villa’s advantage before the break with another superb finish. Rogers then struck shortly after halftime to remove any lingering doubt and send the travelling Villa support into celebration mode.

The victory secured Emery’s fifth Europa League title as a manager, extending his record in the competition after previous triumphs with Sevilla and Villarreal.

“It is hard to put into words. We have worked so hard for this,” Rogers said after the final.

“We knew we had one more game and we all delivered and we came through. It is a great moment for the fans, a great moment for the club, and it will go down in history.”

The scenes at full-time reflected how far Villa have come under Emery.

When the Spaniard arrived in 2022, Villa were hovering just above the Premier League relegation zone and lacking direction. Less than four years later, they are Europa League winners and Champions League qualifiers again.

Villa captain John McGinn lifted the trophy amid fireworks and confetti while lifelong supporter Prince William celebrated wildly in the stands after travelling to Istanbul for the occasion.

“He is a classy guy,” McGinn said of Prince William.

“He was in the dressing room before the game. He is a massive Villa fan so he was never going to miss it.

“He is just a normal guy. It’s great to have his support and hopefully it continues and tonight he can have a couple of drinks with us and maybe get his credit card out at the end of the night!”

Freiburg struggled to cope with Villa’s intensity and attacking quality throughout the final. The Bundesliga side, appearing in their first European final, rarely looked capable of mounting a comeback once Villa established control.

Ollie Watkins praised Emery’s calmness before kickoff and said the manager’s composure spread through the squad.

“It feels amazing,” Watkins said.

“To perform like that was unbelievable. We really controlled the game and we punished them in the end. It is an unbelievable experience, it’s what you dream of.

“Unai was really calm today. Sometimes in the league games he can be a little bit anxious because he wants us to win, but today he was really calm and that set the tone.”

For Emery, the win also carried personal significance after difficult spells elsewhere in England, including his brief and ultimately unsuccessful period at Arsenal.

Now, with another European trophy added to his collection, he has firmly cemented his legacy at Villa Park.

“I am always very grateful for Europe, for every competition, Conference League, Champions League, Europa League, but especially Europa League,” Emery said.

“We fought strongly in this competition and tried to give it our best. We played in a very serious way this year.”
