BBC Investigates the Turmoil behind Morecambe suspension

The National League has frozen Morecambe FC’s participation until 20 August, citing pressing financial concerns and a failure to satisfy compliance conditions.

The governing body noted it had “serious concerns” about the club’s ability to meet league requirements. Morecambe’s opening matches versus Boston, Brackley and Scunthorpe have already been shelved. A reassessment is scheduled for 20 August — by then, proof of financial capacity to complete the season must be submitted or the club could face expulsion.

The league’s statement read: “It was decided further sanctions must be imposed, with the club’s membership to be suspended with immediate effect.”

Morecambe’s summer has lurched from one crisis to another. Ownership issues have engulfed the club since its relegation from League Two, and all members of the board have resigned during a stalled sale process. Despite two groups having offers accepted, neither has completed a takeover.

Current owner Jason Whittingham has missed multiple deadlines he set himself to finalise a sale. With no transfer having gone through, and no evidence provided to the league of long-term funding, the club’s 105-year history hangs precariously.

Whittingham acquired Morecambe in 2018 via Bond Group. His track record with business ventures is chequered. Of 25 directorships listed at Companies House, 18 have ended in administration, dissolution or liquidation. Even before taking control of the Shrimps, two of his companies had been dissolved by compulsory strike-off.

Despite that, he cleared the English Football League’s ownership tests. Whittingham, alongside business associate Colin Goldring, faced a 12-month disqualification from holding directorships in 2022. That same year, the pair’s other club, Worcester Warriors, entered liquidation. Goldring is also barred by the Solicitors Regulation Authority from legal practice without prior approval.

Whittingham has since attempted to offload the club again. He named Jonny Cato as the frontman of a prospective buyer’s consortium. But since that public identification 10 days ago, no evidence has surfaced of Cato’s existence in UK business registers. The only person under that name online is a Swedish MP. Another businessman with a similar name confirmed to the BBC he has no link to the matter.

Whittingham has declined to comment when approached.

A separate group, the Panjab Warriors, announced earlier this year they had struck a deal to buy the club. The group claimed to have poured in significant funds in anticipation of taking control and even had a successor lined up to replace manager Derek Adams. But talks appear to have collapsed. According to lawyers acting for minority shareholders, they have had no contact from Panjab Warriors for over a week.

While Panjab Warriors tout their sporting ambitions on their website, no verifiable list of prior investments is publicly available. Their stake is owned predominantly by JKM Capital, a firm registered as dormant with just £100 in cash. Its majority shareholder, Kuljeet Singh Momi, lists involvement in numerous young companies without notable profit. His previous business partner, 21-year-old Sarbjot Johal, was linked with a failed purchase last year.

Morecambe’s squad is threadbare — only 10 senior professionals remain. Staff received only partial wages for June, and the status of July’s payroll is unclear. The club also cancelled pre-season fixtures amid the turmoil.

The 20 August deadline looms. Without fresh backing or a viable sale, the threat of expulsion — or worse — intensifies.
