Carragher labels Salah “selfish” after Liverpool star’s latest swipe at club style
- Jamie Carragher criticised Mohamed Salah after the Liverpool forward questioned the team’s playing style on social media.
- Carragher accused Salah of making the situation about himself during a crucial stage of Liverpool’s season.
- Salah’s comments came after Liverpool’s damaging 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa left Champions League qualification in doubt.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has reignited his public feud with Mohamed Salah by branding the departing forward “selfish” over comments criticising the club’s style of play.
Salah, who is expected to make his final Liverpool appearance against Brentford at Anfield this weekend, sparked controversy after posting on social media that the club must rediscover its “heavy metal” football identity.
The Egypt international’s remarks were widely interpreted as criticism of head coach Arne Slot and Liverpool’s tactical approach this season.
Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, said he was not surprised by Salah’s latest intervention.
“I told everybody, ‘something else will come before the end of the season,’” Carragher said.
“He’ll drop another bomb a little bit like Ronaldo did on the way out of Manchester United. I thought it may come after the season when he’d moved on, but no.”
Carragher also referenced an earlier disagreement with Salah from this season, when the Liverpool forward claimed he had been “thrown under the bus” and suggested his relationship with Slot had deteriorated following Liverpool’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Leeds United.
“Less than two years ago, I called him selfish for doing an interview and I think that rings true again,” Carragher added.
“Liverpool have a really important week. They are still not fully qualified for the Champions League and it should be about Liverpool FC, not Salah FC.
“It’s vital that Liverpool make the Champions League positions, but I’m not surprised and it’s not a good look at all.”
Salah’s social media post came shortly after Liverpool suffered a damaging 4-2 defeat away to Aston Villa, a result that increased pressure on Slot and left the club still fighting to secure a Champions League place heading into the final weekend of the season.
“Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve,” Salah wrote on X.
“I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies.
“That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good.
“It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it.”
Former Wayne Rooney striker Wayne Rooney also weighed in on the controversy, suggesting Slot should consider dropping Salah for Liverpool’s final game of the campaign because of the comments.
Liverpool head into the final weekend of the season still needing points to guarantee qualification for next season’s Champions League, with growing unrest among supporters after a disappointing title defence under Slot.
