Michael Carrick has praised Bruno Fernandes for his outstanding influence on Manchester United’s season, describing the midfielder as a central figure in the club’s push for Champions League qualification.

Fernandes, 31, has enjoyed a prolific campaign, registering 18 assists and putting himself firmly in contention for end-of-season individual awards. He now sits just two assists short of the Premier League single-season record held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.

Carrick highlighted the importance of giving Fernandes the freedom to operate in advanced positions while maintaining responsibility within the team structure.

“Personally, I think giving Bruno the platform to go and perform is key,” Carrick said. “We try to create a structure that brings out the best in everyone, but I like seeing Bruno in attacking positions with a bit of freedom.”

The United head coach also praised Fernandes’ all-round contribution, including his defensive work during the recent 1-0 win over Chelsea.

“He plays for the team and has a big responsibility. He sees things, he’s creative, and he’s a big influence in the group,” Carrick added.

Fernandes has been a key figure at Old Trafford since joining from Sporting in January 2020, and Carrick noted the player’s continued development over time.

“I’ve known Bruno a long time, so it hasn’t surprised me,” he said. “Experience helps, and you can see he’s grown in a really positive way.”

With United firmly in the race for a top-five finish, Fernandes’ form could prove decisive in the closing stages of the season.
