Celtic Sack Nancy After 33 Day Spell
- Celtic have dismissed Wilfried Nancy after eight matches and six defeats
- Paul Tisdale has also left as head of football operations
- Celtic face a packed schedule with league and Europa League pressure ahead
Celtic have sacked manager Wilfried Nancy after just 33 days in charge, ending a short and turbulent spell that brought six defeats in eight games.
Paul Tisdale has also left his role as head of football operations following Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat by Rangers in the Old Firm derby.
Nancy was appointed on Dec. 3 after leaving Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer. His departure comes after a run that included four straight defeats at the start of his tenure, one of them in the League Cup final.
Celtic confirmed the decision in a club statement.
The club announced they had “decided to terminate the contract of manager Wilfried Nancy with immediate effect.”
“The club thanks Wilfried for his efforts and wishes him and his family well for the future.
“Wilfried’s assistants, Kwame Ampadu, Jules Gueguen, and Maxime Chalier, will also be leaving the club and they take with them our good wishes.
“The club can also confirm that Paul Tisdale has left his position as head of football operations. We thank Paul for the contribution he has made in that role.
“A further update will be provided to supporters as soon as is practical,”
Nancy’s final match was the loss to Rangers at Celtic Park. His stint ended up slightly shorter than the interim spell of predecessor Martin O’Neill, who took charge after Brendan Rodgers left on Oct. 27.
Celtic next play Dundee United on Saturday, starting a run of eight matches in 24 days. That spell includes two Europa League games against Bologna and Utrecht. Celtic sit 24th, the final qualifying position, and need results to avoid an early exit.
In the league, Celtic visit Hearts on Jan. 25 in a match that could shape the title race. Hearts lead the Scottish Premiership by six points over Celtic and Rangers as they chase a first title for a non Old Firm club since Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen in 1985.
