  • Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine in Odense and received immediate medical attention.
  • Denmark’s team doctor confirmed the midfielder regained consciousness quickly and walked off the pitch himself.
  • The match was abandoned, with further hospital examinations planned to determine the cause of the incident.

Christian Eriksen is conscious and recovering in hospital after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, prompting the match to be abandoned at the Nature Energy Park stadium in Odense.

The 34-year-old midfielder, who has enjoyed a distinguished career with Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Denmark, fell to the ground in the 65th minute after appearing to clutch his chest with both hands.

Footage from the stadium showed players from both teams immediately signalling for medical assistance before forming a protective circle around Eriksen as medics rushed onto the pitch.

The incident inevitably brought back memories of Euro 2020, when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s group-stage match against Finland and required life-saving treatment on the field before being fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD).

This time, the response was swift and reassuring.

The Danish Football Federation later confirmed Eriksen was conscious and communicating following the incident, while announcing that the match would not continue.

Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen provided an encouraging update, revealing that Eriksen regained consciousness rapidly after collapsing.

“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch himself,” Boesen said.

“As I see it, the pacemaker is responding as it should. He was briefly gone, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.

“He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident.”

Boesen also revealed that Eriksen was keen to reassure teammates and supporters amid understandable concern.

“We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital,” Boesen added.

“But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”

The scenes cast a shadow over what had been a routine international fixture, with supporters inside the stadium falling silent as medical staff attended to Eriksen.

For many watching, it was a reminder of the remarkable resilience Eriksen has shown since the events of June 2021. After suffering a cardiac arrest during the European Championship, few expected him to return to elite football. Yet he rebuilt his career, first with Brentford and later at Manchester United, while continuing to represent Denmark on the international stage.

Saturday’s incident will now prompt further medical investigations as doctors seek to establish exactly what caused the collapse.

Neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but football took a distant second place in Odense as concern centred solely on Eriksen’s wellbeing.

For now, the most important news is the one teammates, supporters and the wider football community desperately wanted to hear: Christian Eriksen is conscious, communicating and recovering.
