Enzo Fernández has pledged to continue giving everything for Argentina after the reigning world champions fell short in the FIFA World Cup final, insisting representing his country remains the greatest honour of his career.

The Chelsea midfielder issued an emotional message to supporters after Spain ended Argentina’s hopes of retaining the trophy with a 1-0 extra-time victory at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Fernández’s evening ended in disappointment after he was sent off late in normal time for a second bookable offence, leaving Argentina to play the closing stages with 10 men before Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time. Despite the personal setback, the 25-year-old chose not to address the dismissal directly, instead reflecting on the commitment shown by the squad throughout the tournament.

“As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result,” Fernández wrote on Instagram.

“For years, this group has represented the team in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up.”

Fernández also thanked Argentina supporters for their backing throughout the competition, describing their support as a constant source of motivation.

“Thank you for always being there, for supporting us in every match, for the unconditional support, and for making us feel at home anywhere in the world,” he wrote.

“Wearing my country’s jersey is the greatest honour of my career, and I will continue to give my all every time I get to defend it.”

The midfielder had received his first yellow card for dissent before being dismissed in stoppage time after a late challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí, a moment that left Argentina with an uphill task during extra time.

Defender Cristian Romero also shared an emotional response following the defeat, admitting the result had been difficult to accept while praising the character shown by the squad throughout another run to the World Cup final.

“This time, it just wasn’t meant to be,” Romero wrote.

“It hurts deeply because no one wanted to keep writing this beautiful story more than we did.”

Romero insisted Argentina’s players had represented their country with pride and promised the group would return with renewed determination.

“We have to pick ourselves up, work harder, believe more, and prepare so this jersey returns to the very top,” he said.

Midfielder Leandro Paredes also thanked supporters in a separate social media message after a final overshadowed by confrontations following the final whistle.

“Thank you Argentina. I love you today and always,” Paredes wrote.

“Today I write with a heavy heart for not being able to give our country the joy it deserved, but with enormous pride because we gave everything we had.”

Paredes did not address the post-match altercation involving several Argentina and Spain players, although FIFA has since opened an investigation into the incidents that followed the final whistle.

While the disappointment of losing the World Cup final remains fresh, the messages shared by Argentina’s players reflected a united squad determined to build on another deep tournament run rather than allow one painful night to define their recent achievements.
