“We can confirm that we are investigating an incident in which a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common assault,” a police statement said, referring to Saturday’s football match at Fratton Park. “Our enquiries are ongoing.”

Clubs Urge Caution as a Safeguarding Matter

Portsmouth moved quickly to address supporter concern, issuing a statement on Sunday confirming that both the club and the police were treating the incident as a safeguarding matter. “Portsmouth Football Club are aware of supporter concerns regarding the incident involving a young fan and an opposition player at yesterday’s match at Fratton Park,” the statement read. “As this remains a safeguarding matter and is currently under investigation by both the club and the police, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further on the circumstances at this time.

Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy offered his own account of the moment, saying Bielik had been slapped in the face by the supporter before the confrontation escalated. Bielik’s version of events has not been made public beyond his manager’s comments, and neither club has confirmed the exact sequence that led to the contact caught on camera.

Mousinho Apologises, Calls for the Line Not to Be Crossed

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho took the unusual step of apologising to the visiting Cardiff squad after full time, while also acknowledging his own supporters’ role in creating an intense atmosphere at Fratton Park. Speaking in quotes reported by the BBC, Mousinho said: “It wasn’t a good incident. I have just seen him there, and he was OK, but that’s not the point, we can’t be having that.
