Eriksen Criticises Amorim Over ‘Worst United’ Claim
- Christian Eriksen says Amorim’s public wording piled pressure on an already strained squad
- He argues some messages belong inside the dressing room, not in headlines
- United finished 15th last season and sit sixth after 18 games
Former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has criticised Ruben Amorim for describing last season’s side as the “worst” in the club’s history, saying it “didn’t help at all.”
Amorim has repeatedly challenged his squad during a turbulent spell in charge, and in January he said, “we are the worst team, maybe, in the history of Manchester United.”
Eriksen, who left United in the summer after three years at Old Trafford, said the timing mattered. He said the group were already trying to block out external noise and that Amorim’s words added a fresh layer of pressure.
“That didn’t help,” Eriksen told The Sunday Times. “Yeah, that didn’t help at all. I mean, that was not … I don’t think that helped the players at all.
“Some stuff you can say inside and it’s not too clever to say outside, to put extra pressure and put an extra label on the players who were already trying to do their best.
“I don’t think that helped at all, no. Then if he’s right or wrong, whatever, but I think for us it was a bit of like, ‘Oh, here we go again. Another headline.’”
United ended last season in 15th place in the Premier League. This season they are sixth after 18 games.
Eriksen, who made more than 300 league appearances in England, joined Wolfsburg on a free transfer in the summer.
