Guardiola cautious on Rodri injury but demands focus from Manchester City
- Rodri set to miss Burnley trip but injury not expected to derail title run-in
- Manchester City can go top with victory at Turf Moor after Arsenal win
- Guardiola warns against complacency with focus shifting quickly to next test
There was relief more than anything else when Pep Guardiola spoke about Rodri. Not fit for Burnley, yes. But not a long-term problem. That matters at this stage of a season when everything tightens.
The midfielder came off late in the win over Arsenal and subsequent checks confirmed a groin issue. Enough to keep him out of Wednesday’s trip to Turf Moor, but not, in Guardiola’s words, something that should linger.
“I think he will not be ready for tomorrow,” Guardiola said. “We will see for the next games. Maybe the FA Cup, maybe a bit later.”
It is the kind of update City would have taken before the tests were even done. Rodri has been central to everything. Lose him now and the rhythm changes.
City, of course, have given themselves a real chance. The 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Etihad has shifted the feel of the title race. They are within three points, with a game in hand. Win at Burnley and they go top.
But Guardiola was quick to bring the focus back down. No lingering on Sunday. No sense that anything has been won.
“We said it straight after the game, don’t lose focus,” he added. “Arsenal are still top. Right now, they would be champions.”
It is classic Guardiola. Praise the moment, then move on from it almost immediately.
There is also a practical concern. The turnaround is shorter now. Less recovery time, physically and mentally. Burnley might be fighting at the other end of the table, but that can bring its own problems.
City have been here before. They know what a run-in demands. Precision, consistency, and no slip-ups against teams they are expected to beat.
Rodri’s absence will be felt, even if only for a game or two. The bigger picture, though, remains unchanged. City are in it. Very much in it.
