Pep Guardiola has confirmed Rodri will miss Manchester City’s FA Cup semifinal against Southampton as the club look to carefully manage his return from injury.
The Spain international picked up a groin problem during City’s win over Arsenal and was absent for the 1-0 victory against Burnley. Guardiola has now ruled him out of Sunday’s Wembley clash and stressed the importance of avoiding further setbacks.
“We don’t want to take a risk,” Guardiola said. “Hopefully he can be back soon, but we don’t want to lose him for the next five games.”
Rodri could still return for City’s Premier League trip to Everton on May 4, though the manager indicated a cautious approach will be taken before any decision is made.
Guardiola also suggested he may rotate his squad for the semifinal, citing the physical and emotional toll of recent matches, particularly the high-intensity win over Arsenal in the title race.
“Arsenal was so demanding emotionally,” he said. “Three days later, it’s normal that our players are tired.”
City face additional challenges at Wembley, with Guardiola highlighting concerns over pitch conditions and the tactical demands posed by Southampton.
“The opponent gives a question mark on the way we have to play,” he added. “The grass is thick and there are many things to think about.”
Despite those concerns, City head into the semifinal in strong form as they continue to compete on multiple fronts, balancing their pursuit of silverware with the need to keep key players fit during a crucial stage of the season.
