Gyökeres Points to Dry Pitch as Arsenal Title Push Stumbles

• Viktor Gyökeres cites Emirates pitch conditions after Bournemouth defeat
• Arsenal suffer third straight domestic loss to dent title momentum
• Gunners remain confident ahead of crucial run of fixtures

Viktor Gyökeres suggested conditions at the Emirates Stadium did not help Arsenal as their Premier League title challenge suffered a setback in a 2-1 defeat to AFC Bournemouth.

The loss, Arsenal’s third in a row domestically, has opened the door for Manchester City to close the gap at the top, with Pep Guardiola’s side able to cut the deficit to six points with victory over Chelsea.

Gyökeres, who scored from the penalty spot to level the match, also had a late chance to rescue a point but could not convert, slipping as he struck his effort.

“The pitch was maybe a bit dry,” he said. “That didn’t help. But we had chances and we need to do better with them.”

It was a flat performance from a side that, only days earlier, had produced a disciplined display to beat Sporting CP in the Champions League.

That contrast will concern Mikel Arteta more than any surface condition. Arsenal looked short of rhythm and, at times, urgency, particularly in the final third.

The timing is awkward. A Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Sporting awaits, followed by a trip to the Etihad Stadium that could shape the title race.

If City win their upcoming fixtures, including that meeting with Arsenal, the gap could disappear entirely with five games remaining.

Still, Gyökeres struck a note of calm rather than panic.

“We have to look forward,” he said. “Think positive and focus on the next games.”

That is the message coming out of Arsenal. Internally, there is belief. Externally, there are now questions again.

The next week will go a long way to answering them.
