Harry Kane says his voice has returned after England’s dramatic World Cup victory over Mexico, admitting the celebrations following one of the biggest wins of his international career left him barely able to speak.
The England captain scored from the penalty spot during his side’s thrilling 3-2 round-of-16 victory, helping Thomas Tuchel’s team secure a quarterfinal meeting with Norway after surviving the closing stages with 10 men following Jarell Quansah’s dismissal.
Kane’s post-match television interview quickly went viral after he struggled to get his words out following England’s celebrations, which included a spirited rendition of Oasis classic Wonderwall inside the dressing room.
Speaking in a video shared on social media a day later, the Bayern Munich striker confirmed his voice had recovered.
“As you can hear, my voice is back,” Kane said.
“I mean, what an all-timer of an interview last night, that was.”
“Glad to see everyone having a good laugh about it, all over social media.”
“But yeah, it was the perfect interview to end a perfect night.”
Kane reflected on the occasion, describing the atmosphere and England’s resilience as among the most memorable experiences of his international career.
“Going into that game was so special,” he said.
“The atmosphere, the stadium was just, I think everyone was so excited just to be there and play in this iconic game.”
“And then to kind of come through the adversaries during the game, and battle the way we did, and put our bodies on the line, and boys covering every blade of grass, was just incredible to be a part of, to be honest.”
“It’s one of my favorite games in an English shirt without a doubt.”
England recovered from conceding late pressure after Raúl Jiménez reduced Mexico’s deficit from the penalty spot, holding on to book a place in the last eight after Kane’s penalty had restored a two-goal advantage earlier in the second half.
The victory extended England’s World Cup campaign and set up a highly anticipated quarterfinal against Norway, where Kane will face fellow Golden Boot contender Erling Haaland.
The England captain said attention has now turned fully to the next challenge.
“We recover now,” Kane said.
“We calm down.”
“We have a couple days relaxing and then obviously get prepared for a massive quarterfinal.”
England face Norway on Saturday in Miami with a place in the World Cup semifinals at stake, as Kane and Haaland prepare to renew one of international football’s biggest striking rivalries.
