Amad Breaks the Deadlock After Woodwork Denies Both Sides in End-to-End Thriller

Amad Diallo came off the bench to score a 90th-minute winner as Ivory Coast edged Ecuador 1-0 in a wildly entertaining Group E contest that somehow remained goalless until the final moments. The Manchester United forward expertly steered a shot inside the far post after a strong run and cross from Wilfried Singo, sparking scenes of joyous celebration among the Ivorian supporters in Philadelphia and sending Les Elephants to the top of Group E alongside Germany.

The first half was a breathless affair in which Ecuador twice came agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock through the frame of the goal. John Yeboah struck first, unleashing a venomous effort from outside the area that crashed against the crossbar with goalkeeper Yahia Fofana beaten. Minutes later Alan Minda was played in by a perfectly weighted Pedro Vite through ball, and his curling effort also struck the bar. Enner Valencia blazed over after Emmanuel Agbadou’s slip gave him room in the penalty area, and Ecuador looked the more likely side to score.

Ivory Coast were far from passive, however. Yan Diomande, at 19 years and 212 days the first teenager to represent Ivory Coast at a World Cup, was an electric presence on the right flank, regularly advancing into dangerous areas and causing Ecuador’s defense constant problems. His raids deserved better service in the final third, but Pepe dwelt too long on one opportunity and struck another shot into teammate Wahi. Bazoumana Toure’s low drive forced a fingertip save from Hernan Galindez as the half ended scoreless despite the avalanche of chances.

The second half continued in the same vein. Valencia smashed a shot off the post from a tight angle after a neat one-two with Gonzalo Plata, making it three times Ecuador had struck the woodwork. Ivory Coast then had their turn when Wahi connected sweetly with a first-time strike, but the ball cannoned off the crossbar to deny him.

As the match wore on, Ivory Coast began to seize control of possession as Ecuador retreated. The dangerous Diomande twice fired high and wide after breaking into the box, and his cross was the one Wahi turned onto the bar. At the other end Plata forced a save from Fofana and Joel Ordonez headed over from a free kick, but the decisive moment belonged to Amad. Singo surged down the right and delivered a cross into the area, and the substitute caressed a composed finish into the bottom corner to settle a match that had threatened to end without the goal it deserved.

Amad spoke about the mentality that carried Ivory Coast through a grueling contest. “We needed that. We came here to make history. We still have two more matches ahead of us, and we need to approach them with the same mentality and try to win them. We had to stay focused. We knew it was going to be a difficult match because we know the Ecuadorian players – they’re physically very strong. They caused us problems, of course, but we stayed composed and remained focused,” Amad said.

Diomande, who was awarded Player of the Match for his tireless display, reflected on the weight of representing his country on the world stage. “We fought hard, we succeeded, and we’re all delighted. It’s always a pleasure to represent your country. It’s tough and it’s stressful because we’re representing nearly 33 million people. We’re playing for our families, our friends, our loved ones, and in this kind of competition we all want to give it our all. We want to win every match. We want to make our mark on history, and that’s what we’re all trying to do together,” Diomande said.

The result puts Ivory Coast level on three points with Germany, who beat Curacao 7-1 earlier in the day in Houston, at the top of Group E. Ecuador, who had looked the more dangerous side for long stretches, are left to reflect on three strikes against the woodwork and nothing to show for them. Ivory Coast face Germany next in Toronto, while Ecuador meet Curacao in Kansas City with both matches on Saturday.
