Jamie Carragher has tipped Mohamed Salah to resist the financial allure of the Saudi Pro League in order to extend his playing career at a top European club.

The 33-year-old Egypt international confirmed this week that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the current campaign. While a move to Saudi Arabia has been widely speculated, Carragher believes Salah still has the ambition to pursue Champions League success before considering such a switch.

Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Carragher said: “I think Mo Salah, the way he’s driven like a Ronaldo, I don’t see the Saudi thing just yet. I can see him in Italy with one of the giants. I just think your career’s over when you go there [Saudi Arabia]. I think he’ll still be looking at his Champions League record or how many goals he can get. I still think he thinks, ‘I’m still one of the best players, and me leaving now is not the end of my top-level career, I’ve still got something to give’.”

Salah, who joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 after two seasons in Italy, has helped the club secure a Champions League title and has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances, placing him sixth on the club’s all-time scoring list behind legends such as Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard, and Ian Rush.

Carragher, who previously criticised Salah following his mixed-zone interview after being left on the bench against Leeds United last year, said the forward’s decision to leave Liverpool with a year remaining on his contract is “the right decision for everyone.”

“In hindsight, could they have done this last summer? But how could you not give the best player in the Premier League a new contract last season. It’s very difficult to say with hindsight. It probably happened a year earlier than we thought,” Carragher added.

Despite Salah’s departure, the former Liverpool defender believes the Egypt international still has plenty to contribute at the highest level before ultimately considering moves to less competitive leagues like the Saudi Pro League or MLS.
