John Henry sends warning as Liverpool struggles test FSG standards
- John Henry insists Fenway Sports Group “don’t settle for mediocrity”
- Liverpool enduring worst season in years despite Champions League push
- Message follows decision to sack Alex Cora at Boston Red Sox
John Henry has warned that Fenway Sports Group will not tolerate underperformance, even as Liverpool endure a difficult campaign.
Liverpool have suffered 18 defeats this season, their worst tally since the 2014-15 campaign under Brendan Rodgers. Despite that, they remain on course to qualify for the Champions League, which is considered the minimum expectation following last season’s Premier League title.
Henry’s comments came in response to his decision to dismiss Alex Cora as manager of the Boston Red Sox after a poor start to the MLB season.
Writing to Sports Business Journal, Henry stressed that fan frustration must be met with higher standards rather than excuses.
“Fans get frustrated,” Henry said. “It doesn’t mean you ignore them, it means you work harder — you don’t settle for mediocrity. You have to win.”
Referencing Liverpool, Henry recalled a fan protest involving a banner flown over a match against Manchester United calling for change, underlining the pressure that comes with ownership.
Head coach Arne Slot is understood to retain the backing of the club hierarchy, but Henry’s comments suggest expectations remain high and that this season’s struggles must prove to be an exception rather than a trend.
With Champions League qualification still within reach, Liverpool’s final weeks of the campaign will be crucial in shaping perceptions of a season that has fallen below the standards set by FSG.
