Jonathan David produced a stunning hat trick as Canada secured the first World Cup victory in the nation’s history with a dominant 6-0 win over Qatar in Vancouver on Thursday.

The emphatic result not only delivered a landmark moment for Canadian soccer but also matched the largest margin of victory ever recorded by a World Cup host nation. The six-goal triumph equaled victories achieved by Italy in 1934, Brazil in 1950 and Argentina in 1978.

Canada’s six goals also doubled their total World Cup scoring output from all previous appearances combined.

The only concern on an otherwise memorable evening was a serious-looking injury suffered by midfielder Ismaël Koné during the second half.

Koné required lengthy treatment after a heavy challenge from Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo before being stretchered from the field. Madibo was shown a red card for the tackle as Qatar ended the match with nine players following Homam Ahmed’s first-half dismissal.

Canada took control of the contest in the 16th minute when Cyle Larin opened the scoring.

David’s volley was punched away by goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, but the rebound fell kindly for Larin, who converted from close range and celebrated in front of a jubilant home crowd.

David doubled Canada’s advantage in the 29th minute with a superb right-footed volley, ending a lengthy wait for a goal from open play.

Qatar’s situation worsened shortly afterward when Ahmed was sent off in the 33rd minute.

The referee initially awarded Canada a penalty and issued a yellow card, but a VAR review determined the foul occurred outside the penalty area. The spot kick was overturned, but Ahmed’s punishment was upgraded to a red card.

Canada capitalized on their numerical advantage deep into first-half stoppage time when David scored his second goal.

A goalmouth scramble following a shot that struck the crossbar allowed the Lille striker to force the ball home and send Canada into halftime with a commanding 3-0 lead.

The atmosphere briefly turned tense after Koné’s injury early in the second half, with teammates surrounding the midfielder as medical staff attended to him.

Substitute Nathan Saliba helped restore the mood by scoring directly from a free kick in the 64th minute to make it 4-0.

Canada added a fifth goal in the 75th minute when Mohamed Manai inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure.

David then completed his hat trick in stoppage time, becoming only the second player at the 2026 World Cup to score three goals in a match alongside Argentina captain Lionel Messi.

The victory lifted Canada to the top of Group B on four points, ahead of Switzerland on goal difference, and left them in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stage before their final group match against the Swiss on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Mark Carney attended the match after missing Canada’s opener due to G7 commitments in France and watched from the stands alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Canada captain Alphonso Davies and defender Moïse Bombito were both available after injury absences but did not feature.

For Qatar, the defeat continued a difficult World Cup history as the Gulf nation remains without a victory at the tournament after also losing all three group matches as hosts in 2022.

Switzerland’s earlier 4-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina means the race for qualification remains alive heading into the final round of Group B fixtures, but Canada now controls its own destiny after a record-breaking night in Vancouver.
