Manchester United supporter Frank Ilett, widely known online as The United Strand, remains committed to a pledge he began on 5 October 2024, when he filmed himself taking his final haircut until the club recorded five consecutive victories.

At the time, Ilett posted a poll asking followers when they expected his next haircut to take place. Of more than 27,000 responses, 90 percent selected 2026. Following United’s 1-1 draw at West Ham on Tuesday, the wait continues.

Ilett’s online presence has grown rapidly. He now has more than 2.3 million followers across social media platforms and hosted a YouTube livestream of Tuesday’s match that attracted more than 100,000 viewers at its peak.

Speaking one year into the challenge, Ilett said the concept began as a light-hearted attempt to lift spirits during a difficult period for supporters. He said the video was intended to provide entertainment and share positivity during a frustrating phase for the club.

“I just want to bring some joy to other Manchester United fans in this kind of strange period,” he said. “There was no plan. I thought it would be finished within three or four months.”

“I thought it was just a dip in form, especially after the FA Cup win in May,” he said. “I did not expect it to continue for so long.”

As months passed, the challenge became a visible indicator of United’s continued struggles. Images of Ilett’s growing hair circulated widely across social platforms, turning into a recurring reference point for supporters tracking the team’s form.

“My hair has become a visual reminder of where the club stands,” he said. “That probably explains why the club have not contacted me, but maybe that will change once results improve.”

The scale of attention brought commercial interest. Ilett now works with an agent who manages partnership discussions and media enquiries. He said the focus has shifted from personal humour to a broader audience that follows each update.
