Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans after plans to sign Ederson were thrown into doubt, with the Belgium international emerging as the club’s preferred midfield target ahead of the new Premier League season.

Tielemans remains under contract at Villa Park until 2028, but United are prepared to activate the release clause in his deal after concerns over Ederson’s fitness significantly altered their transfer plans.

The proposed £38.8 million move for the Brazilian midfielder is now expected to collapse following complications surrounding the knee injury he suffered last season.

United have responded by accelerating talks for alternative midfield reinforcements, with Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos also among the club’s leading targets.

Aston Villa are not actively looking to sell Tielemans and recently offered the midfielder a new contract in an attempt to secure his long-term future.

However, United’s willingness to trigger the release clause means the decision now rests with the player.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, discussions remain ongoing between all parties as United attempt to complete the transfer.

The move would provide Michael Carrick with another experienced option in midfield alongside Santos as United prepare for a campaign that includes both domestic and UEFA Champions League football.

United’s need for midfield reinforcements has increased following Casemiro’s departure last season and the long-term injury suffered by Manuel Ugarte during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Uruguay international sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury and is expected to miss a significant portion of the upcoming season.

Carrick guided United back into the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 2023-24 campaign after overseeing a dramatic improvement following Ruben Amorim’s departure earlier this year.

United have already agreed a £50 million deal with Chelsea for Santos, with the Brazilian expected to report for pre-season training once the remaining formalities of the transfer are completed.

The club had also explored a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson after his impressive performances last season.

However, Manchester City secured the midfielder in a deal worth £116 million, making Anderson the second most expensive British player in history behind Jude Bellingham’s £125 million transfer to Real Madrid in 2023.
