Raheem Sterling joins Feyenoord on short-term deal after Chelsea exit

Raheem Sterling has completed a move to Feyenoord on a contract running until the end of the 2025-26 season, ending a month-long spell as a free agent following his departure from Chelsea.

The 31 year-old agreed a mutual termination of his Chelsea contract last month despite having 18 months remaining, as he sought a permanent move to revive his career after falling out of first–team contention.

Sources told ESPN that up to 18 clubs across Europe’s top four leagues expressed interest in signing Sterling. However, the winger was keen to join a side likely to compete in the Champions League and was persuaded by detailed discussions with Feyenoord head coach Robin van Persie.

“As a free agent I’ve had, for the first time in a long time, the opportunity to control the next step in my career,” Sterling said.

“I wanted to take my time to speak with clubs and their head coaches to better understand the role they envisioned for me and ensure that I can add real value in this next chapter.

“Having spoken in great detail with Robin, I’m confident that Feyenoord is a place I can be happy and establish myself as a valued member of the team. Playing abroad is a whole new challenge for me and one I’m ready to embrace.”

Sterling has not played a competitive match since May and had been training away from Chelsea’s first team after being deemed surplus to requirements. His exit was seen as a fresh start following a difficult spell in west London.

The former Liverpool and Manchester City forward has won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and four League Cups, and has earned 82 England caps during a distinguished career.

Van Persie praised the club’s work in securing Sterling’s signature.

“Naturally it’s a fantastic achievement that we’ve convinced a player of Raheem’s calibre to sign with us,” he said. “His qualities can change the outcome of a game, and I am convinced he will be a valuable addition as we push toward our goals in the second half of the season.”

Feyenoord currently sit second in the Eredivisie, 17 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven, and view Sterling as a key addition as they chase domestic success and European qualification.
