Real Madrid Confirm Marc Cucurella Signing as Mourinho Begins Summer Rebuild

Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, with the Spain international committing his future to the club until 2032 as José Mourinho’s second spell at the Santiago Bernabéu begins to take shape.

Madrid did not disclose the financial details of the transfer, although sources told ESPN the agreement is worth an initial €55 million (£47m/$69.3m), with a further €5 million available through performance-related add-ons.

Cucurella becomes Madrid’s first official signing of the summer, arriving just days after Mourinho was appointed as the club’s new head coach following Álvaro Arbeloa’s departure. The Portuguese manager is understood to have been heavily involved in the pursuit of the 27-year-old left-back.

The defender is currently in the United States with Spain ahead of their World Cup opener against Cabo Verde on Monday, but his long-awaited return to Spanish football has now been finalised.

Madrid’s transfer activity is expected to continue in the coming weeks. ESPN previously reported that agreements are already in place for Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté and Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva to join when their contracts expire later this month. The club are also preparing to activate a €20 million release clause to sign Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries.

Cucurella had attracted interest from several Spanish clubs, including Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. Sources told ESPN that Barcelona explored the possibility of re-signing their former academy graduate earlier this year but prioritised strengthening other areas of the squad.

Atlético Madrid advanced their interest further, but Madrid accelerated negotiations after Mourinho’s arrival and moved quickly to complete the transfer.

The move adds another intriguing subplot to next season’s Clásico meetings. Born in Catalonia, Cucurella progressed through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy and made one senior appearance for the club during the 2017-18 season before spells at Eibar and Getafe helped establish him in LaLiga.

His performances earned a move to Brighton & Hove Albion before Chelsea signed him in a €65 million deal in 2022. He went on to make 163 appearances for the Blues, helping the club win the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

However, Cucurella became increasingly frustrated with Chelsea’s direction during the past season. Following the club’s Champions League elimination to Paris Saint-Germain, he publicly criticised the decision to dismiss Enzo Maresca and questioned the long-term strategy being implemented at Stamford Bridge.

With his future now settled, Cucurella can fully focus on Spain’s World Cup campaign. The left-back remains a key figure for Luis de la Fuente after playing an important role in Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 campaign.

Known for celebrating that success by dyeing his hair red, Cucurella has already pledged another memorable tribute, promising to get a tattoo of De la Fuente should Spain lift the World Cup trophy this summer.
