Roberto De Zerbi has apologised to supporters of Tottenham Hotspur who were offended by comments he made about Mason Greenwood during his time in France.

The Tottenham manager addressed the issue during his first interview with the club’s media team, stating that he had no intention of diminishing the seriousness of violence against women or any form of abuse. He said he has consistently supported individuals in vulnerable situations and rejected any suggestion that his views were shaped by sporting considerations.

De Zerbi said he regretted any offence caused and expressed sensitivity to the subject, referencing his personal life while stating that he has always treated such matters with seriousness. He added that he hopes supporters will gain a clearer sense of his position over time.

The controversy stems from comments made while managing Olympique de Marseille, where De Zerbi spoke in support of Greenwood. The forward had faced criminal charges in October 2022, which were later dropped by prosecutors in February 2023 following the withdrawal of key witnesses and an assessment that a conviction was unlikely.

Supporter groups including Proud Lilywhites, Women of the Lane and Spurs Reach had issued statements opposing De Zerbi’s appointment before it was confirmed. The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust also raised concerns, describing the situation as significant for many fans.

Tottenham Hotspur appointed De Zerbi following the dismissal of Igor Tudor, with the team positioned near the bottom of the Premier League table. The club remains close to the relegation zone during a difficult campaign.

De Zerbi has committed to remaining in charge regardless of the division Tottenham compete in next season. He confirmed that he has signed a five year contract and views the role as a long term project.

He stated that the current situation requires a focus on restoring confidence within the squad and reiterated belief in the quality of the players available.
