Arne Slot said there is a “complete pattern” of decisions going against Liverpool FC after a controversial 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The result confirmed Champions League qualification for United and left Liverpool still needing three points from their remaining matches to secure a top-five finish. However, the game was overshadowed by debate around Benjamin Šeško’s first-half goal, which appeared to involve a handball before finding the net.

Despite a lengthy VAR check, the goal stood, putting United 2-0 ahead after an earlier strike from Matheus Cunha. Liverpool later fought back to level the match, but ultimately fell short.

Speaking after the game, Slot questioned the consistency of decisions his side has faced throughout the campaign.

“If it was a touch, which I think it is, then we should have a debate if that is enough to disallow a goal,” he said. “But it is not a surprise this season. If there is a VAR intervention, it goes against us.”

Slot referenced previous incidents, including decisions in matches against Paris Saint-Germain, as part of what he described as a recurring trend. However, he also acknowledged his team’s own shortcomings.

“We did not concede because of the handball,” he added. “We lost the ball in a stupid position. We have to first look at ourselves.”

The Liverpool boss admitted frustration at failing to secure at least a point after recovering from a two-goal deficit.

“If you are 2-2, coming back from 2-0 down, you should at least come out with a draw,” he said. “That is why I am so annoyed we did not get them today.”

Liverpool now face a tense run-in against Chelsea FC, Aston Villa and Brentford FC as they look to secure Champions League football for next season.
