  • Tottenham are considering a move for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes despite Manchester United already holding talks over a deal.
  • Spurs are prepared to offer a higher transfer fee as Roberto De Zerbi continues his summer rebuild.
  • West Ham value Fernandes at around £80 million, with Southampton due 15% of any future transfer.

Tottenham Hotspur are weighing up a move for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes as they look to rival Manchester United for one of the Premier League’s most highly rated young midfielders this summer.

Sources have told ESPN that Spurs have intensified their interest in Fernandes in recent days and are willing to outbid United as Roberto De Zerbi continues a major squad overhaul ahead of the new campaign.

Manchester United remain in discussions with West Ham over a potential transfer, but Tottenham’s growing involvement threatens to complicate negotiations and could spark a bidding war for the 21-year-old.

West Ham are understood to be seeking a fee in the region of £80 million, although competition between the two clubs could drive the price higher before the transfer window closes.

Fernandes has emerged as a key target after impressing during a difficult campaign for West Ham, despite the club suffering relegation to the Championship.

The Portugal youth international joined the Hammers from Southampton last summer in a deal worth an initial £38 million and quickly established himself as one of the team’s standout performers.

His performances have attracted significant attention across the Premier League, with both Tottenham and Manchester United identifying him as a player capable of strengthening their midfield options for the long term.

West Ham are not currently under immediate pressure to sell, which has strengthened their negotiating position.

Any future transfer would also benefit Southampton, who inserted a clause into last year’s agreement entitling them to 15% of any future sale.

Tottenham’s interest forms part of an aggressive recruitment strategy being overseen by De Zerbi following a turbulent season in which the club narrowly avoided relegation.

Spurs have already completed four signings during the current window, with goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka becoming the latest arrival after deals for Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson.

The North London club are also expected to return with an improved offer for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali after seeing an initial proposal worth around £75 million rejected.

Fernandes remains one of several midfield options under consideration, but Spurs view his age, versatility and Premier League experience as major assets.

The midfielder scored four goals and provided four assists in 38 appearances across all competitions last season, producing a series of mature displays despite West Ham’s struggles.

His performances have only increased interest in his future, with both Tottenham and Manchester United now monitoring developments closely as they look to strengthen ahead of the new season.

For West Ham, keeping Fernandes would represent a major boost as they prepare for life in the Championship. However, with two of England’s biggest clubs circling, the battle for his signature could become one of the most closely watched transfer stories of the summer.
