The Defender Who Left a World Cup Part Way Through Is Back for Croatia
Thomas Tuchel has a message for England supporters, and it concerns one player. On Friday, the day he named his squad for the Nations League games against Croatia and Spain, the England manager asked fans to leave the booing of Ben White in the past. White, the Arsenal defender, was booed on his return to international football last March. With Croatia due at Wembley next Thursday, he could soon face that crowd. Tuchel was direct about the reaction: “We were not happy about it [the booing].”
Tuchel Draws a Line Under the March Reaction
Tuchel said he understands why fans were upset, then asked them to stop. “We understand the disappointment of the fans but it’s been expressed now and it should be a closed book.”
He pointed to White’s time with the squad as the reason. “Everybody can see the investment of Ben and the quality of Ben in terms of how he presented himself when he was with us.”
Tuchel also spoke about what he saw when he and White talked. “It was very eventful for him and not so easy,” Tuchel said. “But when I spoke to him I could see the hunger. He deserves to be able to open a new chapter and he deserves positive feedback from the crowd”.
Tuchel has called White up again after the Japan and Uruguay games earlier this year. Against Uruguay last March he scored England’s goal, then gave away the penalty from which the South Americans equalised in a 1-1 draw.
Why the Crowd Turned on White
The anger goes back to the Qatar World Cup. White left that tournament part way through after a difference of opinion with Steve Holland, the assistant to Gareth Southgate. Southgate gave White his last cap in March 2022, and four years passed before the next one. White was never picked again in that time.
Supporters made clear in March that they had not forgiven him for leaving the tournament. Tuchel’s answer is that the fans have had their say. White is one of eight defenders named for the two games.
A Fight for the Right-Back Spot
Tuchel’s backing arrives with a selection contest attached. The England manager sees Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarell Quansah and White competing for the right-back place. He also explained his thinking on the defence:
“Djed [Spence] is on the left side, we left Nico out because he’s not fully, fully fit and needs to take his time to get fully fit and take care of his knee.”
“[Alexander-Arnold] was very good in the last camp, very good in the matches he played. Competition is on and he competes with Jarell and Ben for the position of right full-back.”
Alexander-Arnold plays for Real Madrid and returned to the England squad in September, his first call-up in over a year. Quansah is at Bayer Leverkusen and Spence at Inter Milan. White’s Arsenal teammate Ezri Konsa is also in the squad, and Trevoh Chalobah is unavailable through injury.
What Comes Next for England and White
England face Croatia at Wembley on Thursday 12 November and Spain in Madrid on Sunday 15 November. They sit second behind Spain in Nations League group A3 with three wins and a loss, and one more point from their remaining two matches secures a place in the quarter-finals. Spain lead the group by three points, so England need to win in Madrid to top it.
White’s return to the England squad in March came with Tuchel offering him support, and the manager has now taken that case to the fans.
Phil Foden’s lack of contact with Tuchel has been a talking point this week, and Foden is one of the names missing from this squad.
The first test of the request comes next Thursday. If White plays against Croatia, the crowd will show whether Tuchel’s closed book stays closed.
