Unai Emery has launched a strong criticism of VAR following Aston Villa’s 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in their Europa League semifinal first leg.

The Villa manager was left furious after Elliot Anderson avoided a red card for a late first-half challenge on Ollie Watkins. Anderson appeared to catch Watkins’ ankle with his studs, but despite the severity of the tackle, VAR chose not to intervene.

Emery described the decision as a “huge mistake” and questioned why the incident was not reviewed more seriously.

“I was feeling so comfortable with how the referee managed the 90 minutes, but after watching the VAR action with Ollie Watkins, it’s a huge mistake,” he said.

The Spanish coach expressed concern over player safety, suggesting the challenge could have resulted in a serious injury.

“Ollie Watkins was close to breaking his ankle and the VAR — it’s his responsibility. I don’t understand why they didn’t intervene. One action like that can break his ankle and it’s so clear.”

Despite his anger, Emery reiterated his general support for VAR but insisted it must be applied correctly.

“I am always with VAR 100%, but we must manage VAR in the right way. One action like that doesn’t make sense because it’s so clear. Where is the doubt?”

The controversial moment overshadowed Villa’s narrow defeat at the City Ground, leaving Emery demanding answers as his side prepares for the second leg.
