West Ham turmoil deepens as Bowen apologises after fan clash
- Jarrod Bowen apologised after being pulled away from West Ham fans following the 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Wolves.
- Manager Graham Potter admitted the team are “in pain” and urged unity amid a third straight loss.
- Wolves substitute Jørgen Strand Larsen struck twice late on to condemn the Hammers to another damaging defeat.
West Ham’s difficult start to the season worsened with a dramatic 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Wolves at Molineux, a match that ended with captain Jarrod Bowen apologising for his attempt to confront travelling supporters.
The England forward had approached the away end after the final whistle to applaud fans but became visibly incensed, appearing to point at someone in the crowd and attempting to climb the advertising boards before being restrained by teammates. Bowen later removed his captain’s armband and walked off with his head bowed.
Within 45 minutes of the final whistle, he issued a statement on Instagram. “Apologies to the fans for tonight’s reaction,” Bowen wrote. “I’m someone who is passionate and will fight every time I step on the pitch. But I need to set a better example and you fans know how much I love you and this club. We ride through the bad times together and I’ll see you all Sunday.”
Manager Graham Potter acknowledged the raw emotions of the evening while emphasising Bowen’s leadership qualities. “We’re all in pain so we need everybody to help, we need everybody’s support, we need to push forward and on to the next match,” Potter said. “The team’s suffering at the moment, we all are, we’re all hurting. I can assure you no-one’s happy.
“I have no idea what was said or anything. Our supporters have been fantastic, they are hurting because of the results we’ve had and Jarrod obviously cares about the club and the team. It’s just an exchange of views by people who care. Everyone is hurting, rightly so because we haven’t had the results we’d like. Jarrod has been a fantastic captain and servant for the club.”
Potter also stressed the need for unity. “Our supporters have been fantastic. They are hurting because of the results we have had and Jarrod obviously cares about the club and the team. He gave everything again and it was just an exchange of views by people who care. The most important relationship at a club is between the fans and the team. We need our fans and everyone to stick together. The team is suffering at the moment. We are all hurting, I can assure you no-one is celebrating or happy about what we’re doing. We’re all in pain.”
The defeat, West Ham’s third in succession, piled more pressure on Potter, who has won just five of his 22 matches in charge since replacing Julen Lopetegui in January. The Hammers have conceded 11 goals across those three losses, including a 5-1 defeat to Chelsea last week, and face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday.
On the pitch, Rodrigo Gomes gave Wolves the lead before goals from Tomás Soucek and Lucas Paquetá turned the game in West Ham’s favour by the 63rd minute. However, substitute Jørgen Strand Larsen struck twice in the 82nd and 84th minutes to secure a comeback win for Wolves.
Afterwards, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira praised his matchwinner while addressing transfer speculation. “Jorgen is our player and very important for us,” he said. “We will see what happens. I understand football, every player has a price — even [Lionel] Messi or Cristiano [Ronaldo] — but for me, he is very, very important.”
For West Ham, the focus now shifts to regaining stability both on and off the field, with Potter and Bowen alike urging supporters to remain united through the turbulence.
