Why Jude Bellingham Avoided New FIFA Red Card Rule During England’s World Cup Draw With Ghana

  • Jude Bellingham escaped punishment despite being pictured covering his mouth while speaking to Ghana’s Jordan Ayew.
  • FIFA’s new World Cup rule only applies when players cover their mouths during confrontational exchanges.
  • Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron remains the only player sent off under the regulation after his dismissal against Turkey.

A picture of England midfielder Jude Bellingham covering his mouth while speaking to Ghana forward Jordan Ayew during Tuesday’s 0-0 World Cup draw has sparked debate over FIFA’s controversial new disciplinary rule.

The law, introduced specifically for the 2026 World Cup, allows players to be sent off if they cover their mouths while speaking to an opponent during a confrontation. Following the publication of images showing Bellingham talking to Ayew, some supporters questioned why the England star was not punished.

The answer lies in the interpretation of the rule.

FIFA has not banned players from covering their mouths while speaking. Instead, the regulation is designed to target situations where players conceal their words during heated confrontations with opponents.

The rule was introduced at the request of FIFA president Gianni Infantino following an incident in February when Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni received a six-match UEFA ban for homophobic conduct towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during a Champions League match.

Ahead of the tournament, FIFA’s head of referees Pierluigi Collina made clear how officials would distinguish between ordinary conversations and punishable incidents.

“Players can continue to cover their mouth with an arm and the shirt because they may chat with friends,” Collina said.

“It’s normal to chat before, during or after the match.

“So if the conversation is a friendly conversation, they can continue to do it without any problem.

“When the conversation is confrontational, covering the mouth means that you are doing something very wrong, potentially, and the sanction is the red card.”

That explanation appears to have protected Bellingham from any disciplinary action.

There was no indication of hostility between the England midfielder and Ayew, with the pair seemingly engaged in a routine exchange during the match. Similar scenes have been common throughout the tournament, with players and even referees frequently covering their mouths while talking.

The first player to fall foul of the new law was Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almiron during his side’s match against Turkey.

The incident occurred after Paraguay striker Isidro Pitta challenged for a decision following a tackle from Turkey midfielder Ismail Yuksek, sparking a confrontation involving players from both teams.

During the heated exchange, Almiron covered his mouth while speaking to Turkey defender Mert Muldur. Video assistant referee officials reviewed the incident and advised a red card, making Almiron the first player dismissed under the new regulation.

Speaking this week, Infantino defended the introduction of the rule.

“This thing about covering the mouth is for us a very, very important rule,” Infantino said.

“It’s about respect. It’s about the example that we should give.

“If you have nothing to hide, you don’t cover your mouth when you speak to somebody.

“The rules have been made very clear to everyone.”

Almiron received a one-match suspension and will miss Paraguay’s final group-stage fixture against Australia. FIFA confirmed the punishment could have been more severe had there been evidence of abusive language.

The introduction of the law has already generated debate among players, coaches and supporters, with concerns raised about consistency and the possibility of opponents attempting to exploit the regulation.

In Almiron’s case, Muldur immediately drew the attention of match officials to the exchange, prompting questions about whether players could use the rule to influence disciplinary decisions.

The regulation remains optional and can be adopted by individual competitions. At present, the 2026 World Cup is the only tournament using the law, and it remains unclear whether domestic leagues will follow FIFA’s lead after the competition concludes.

For now, Bellingham’s conversation with Ayew serves as a reminder that context remains central to the rule’s application, with ordinary discussions still permitted despite the increased scrutiny surrounding players who choose to cover their mouths while speaking.
