Paul Mullin, a key figure in Wrexham’s rise through the English football pyramid under Hollywood ownership, has left the club to join League One side Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan.

“I’m excited for the next part of my story,” Mullin told Wigan’s official website. “I’ve scored a lot of goals over the last few years, but more than anything, I give my absolute all for the club that I’m playing for, and I’m going to do that again with Wigan.”

The loan deal remains subject to approval from the English Football League, the Football Association, and international clearance.

Mullin played a central role in Wrexham’s rapid ascent from the National League to the Championship, helping the club achieve three consecutive promotions — a first in the history of England’s top five football divisions. A mural of the 30-year-old forward stands in Wrexham city centre as a tribute to his contribution.

Despite being named Wrexham’s Player of the Season three years in a row, Mullin found himself on the fringes during the most recent campaign, when Wrexham secured promotion to the second tier.

His departure marks a significant shift for the club and the “Welcome to Wrexham” series, where Mullin has been a standout personality. His connection with club co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney extended beyond the pitch, with Mullin even making an appearance in the latest Deadpool film.

McElhenney previously described Mullin as “one of the greatest football players in the world.”

Over his time at Wrexham, Mullin scored 110 goals in 172 appearances — a record that cements his place in club history.
